I'm trying to install gentoo from the minimal CD on my ibook g3 700.

I boot from the minimal CD and choose the kernel and options to boot. It proceeds to load the kernel, but then stops at the line "core99_setup_cpu 0 done". It stops here no matter what video options I provide (including ofonly). I've also tried using radeonfb and setting the resolution, refresh rate and colour depth, but I still get the same results. I don't know if it's the video options that are stopping it, but that was my best guess. I've also tried booting with other options, including doscsi and dofirewire, but still always the same result. I've read that incorrect setting of the hardware clock can cause issues, but it seems to be set correctly.

The same thing happened when I tried to install Yellow Dog, though Debian installed successfully.

Your diagnosis was right, this is usually indicative of a non-working framebuffer driver. What exactly are you passing to the kernel to change framebuffer drivers?

It could also be an issue with the kernel that's on the CD, if Debian or an older Gentoo InstallCD boot, you can use those to install the current version of Gentoo. Simply set up the machine as the handbook suggests, but download the current version of the desired stage from the net.

Thanks. Problem solved by installing from 2006.0 instead and then updating.
