Hi,

I tried to boot Gentoo on the Efika via serial console as described in the Wiki. It boots up straight to the point where I should normally get a login prompt but then nothing happens. The last line I see is "Starting local ... [ ok ]".

I booted from an USB stick using the kernel linked in the Wiki article and the PPC minimal install CD squashfs image.

The system seems to be running just fine - I can ping eth0 from another machine. There's just no login prompt. A few lines before it stops I can see "Adding ttyPSC0 console to inittab [ ok ]" so this should have worked fine, too. Maybe ttyPSC0 is still missing from securetty?

I tried booting with a AGP graphics card plugged in but the only card I had at hand (an old Matrox Millenium) didn't seem to be working correctly - I got no output after "returning from prom_init".

Very likely, I didn't change the livecd squashfs image. So that sentence of the wiki article is not helpful. I've removed it for now.

I have a matrox card too (g450) and that works. It does take a while to get past the "returning from prom_init" though. That had me fooled in the beginning, but apparently it did simply continue after a while. Iirc the millenium is supported by the matroxfb driver as well, so it ought to work afaik.

You could simply plug in a keyboard and type blind to change the root password and start ssh. After that you should be able to ssh in.

OK - got it. The problem wasn't securetty or inittab (I tested that by changing these in the squashfs image). You just have to append "console=ttyPSC0,115200" instead of just "console=ttyPSC0" as kernel parameter. Now everything runs just fine :D
