The reason i'm asking is that i'm having some trouble with mine, mostly the backlight and was wondering if any one had any ideas on how to go about fixing it.

Its a Rev B. 2ghz (with a smu) with the radeon 9600, currently 64ul, athough im in the process of reinstalling to 32ul (just so can have a go on mol :) )

Ive tried all sorts of stuff to sort this out and nothing is working.

I was wondering if anyone else had a similar prob and fixed it, or if there are any other really big annoyances with this comp and linux.

Mark

Sure, we have had a number of folks get Gentoo working on their iMac G5s. Can you be more specific about the problems? You might also get more timely help on IRC should you choose to pursue.

Sorry bout late reply, been away from home. The problem is that the backlight wont turn off, even with
Code:
xset dpms force off
it just turns the screen black. So after much googling i found pbuttonsd, but that wont work becasue there is no /dev/pmu, the same for fblevel.

also /sys/class/backlight is empty. I have the radeon fb driver with i2c and backlight support compiled in, but in dmesg it says no backlight was found. In openfirmware there is a bvacklight device listed when i do a
Code:
dev / ls

I noticed that if the kernel isnt 64bit then loads of new options appear, however ive since discovered a 32bit kernel cant boot on this comp, so that a dead end!

So i was just wondering if any one else had similar problems and could fix them, if not i think im just going to installl a switch to kill it myself, but just wanted to find out before i butchered me comp :)

I run Gentoo on an iMac G5 as well. I never considered it much of a problem, but I notice the backlight doesn't get turned off on mine either. The screen goes black but the backlight stays on.

I have a Radeon 9600 graphics card.

Other than the backlight issue, everything works as expected.

Same here, the only reason its a problem is that its right next to my head when i sleep and its really annoying!

But as well as that i heard its really bad for the light to be on when not in use, as it makes the light run out quicker, and there really expensive to replace.

But like you say other than that it works perfectly, which is cool
