I am unable to get anything when doing startx. I have recompiled the kernel with settings for Radeon 7500 given in PPC FAQ, run xac, all to no avail. all packages, modules etc. compile, machine is synced...the works. am typing this in links, would gladly upload dmesg, xorg log, and anything else but am stuck with the basic terminal and don't know how to attach a file to this post..., is that even possible? would really appreciate a hand...thanks

you can try to reboot with the livecd, mount your filesystem on /mnt/gentoo/, and use ``links -g'' to navigate to the forum; open a new terminal (alt-F2,F3, whatever) and use your mouse to copy/paste text between the terminals to help with posting.

Hope this helps!

in case you all thought I was totally clueless, and a whiner ;-) ...I installed pine, and mailed myself these files to another machine, where I'm editing them. excuse me if they're too long, I've obviously edited a bit...

complete make.conf shows all my flags, I intend to try xfce for speed but would really like to be able to use kde...if the machine will bear it. If you have use flag suggestions, I'll take those, too, of course.

Code:

# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically
# built this stage.
# Please consult /etc/make.conf.example for a more detailed example.
CFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=7450 -mtune=G4 -maltivec -mabi=altivec -fno-strict-aliasing -pipe -mpowerpc-gfxopt"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
# This should not be changed unless you know exactly what you are doing.  You
# should probably be using a different stage, instead.
CHOST="powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu"
MAKEOPTS="-j2"
USE="X alsa cdr cdrom dbus dri gkrellm gmail gtk hal html ieee1394 java javacomm

Okay, now come to Xorg.0.logs, one generated most recently when I used X -configure. I'm not quite sure how much to copy in here...I'm putting in none of the (II) lines, just (--) plus (++), (!!), (WW) and (EE), for the most part:

I've got another dump, from Xorg.0.log when I used xac (referred to above] but that's longer. I can include that, too, if someone thinks it'll help.

All comments gratefully received. Also, let me know if this belongs in some other forum...

okay, slow getting it. You're right, of course. There is /root/xorg.conf.new, but it doesn't have the string "vbe" or "int10" in it, either. I'll send it in a minute...it doesn't make clear why those modules are loading now.

I've assumed that the .conf generated by xac (which is in /etc/X11) was used by default. So should I trust that one, and if so, how do I get X to look at it? Or do I move it to /root and rename it?

Also, I've been doing all this as root, right? but of course I don't intend to run as root all the time, how do I get this stuff in my user account? right now, /home/david contains nothing at all, and I can't call xac from there, either. Have I been doing far too much as root all along?

thanks

/root/xorg.conf.new is generated by X -configure if you run it as root iirc. Try getting xorg to use the xac generated xorg.conf and post the error messages from the Xorg.0.log when using that config.

Okay, here comes. I reran xac, moved the new xorg.conf to /root (having renamed xorg.conf.new, just in case) and reran startx. I've left you lots to wade through, hardly edited anything but the long list of which cards which driver is good for. I wonder if I should recompile the kernel to exclude the ati rage 128, since that's not what I've got...or doesn't it matter? only one error in the whole thing, but the same result.

various man pages, X, Xorg, xorg.conf, talk about where the server looks for xorg.conf. it's not helpful that the gentoo documentation doesn't explain any of this, and man pages aren't all that easy to read. my machine has no .xinitrc files anywhere, neither in root's home nor my user account's.

sorry if this is very long, but I wanted show all I could. thanks.

I see only one error, but that is expected with the radeon driver and not fatal. As far as I can tell from the log xorg is running. Do you get a black screen or are you returned to the console prompt?

I get a black screen. I _think_ I should see some windows, the ones so amusingly referred to in the Xorg setup documentation as loathsome, horrid, whatever. from X's native window manager.

are you telling me that I have some _other_ problem...?

thanks,

dave

It's probably a setting in the Device section that's causing the black screen.
Try setting Option "UseFBDev" "true"

_That_ did it! Bravo, thanks.

Okay, so now I have these, and assume that the rest will follow with other window managers...whether KDE's or XFCE's? Any ideas about how to fix up a .xinitrc, and also how to get the user account to see these things; is it a PATH question?

thanks,

dave

Code:

It's probably a setting in the Device section that's causing the black screen.
Try setting Option "UseFBDev" "true"

Thats great this setting worked for you but for some reason I cannot find it anywhere in the .config.... is the option spelled differently or am I missing something?

I did a search using the / function but there was no exact option called UseFBDev, the closest I found was just FB, which is just the option that turns on the FB.

Thanks for any clarification

In my xorg.conf, in Section "Device" there is a line that now looks like this:

Code:
Option         "UseFBDev"      "true"  # Try enabling this if it does not work

Originally, it looked like this
Code:
#Option         "UseFBDev"      "false"  # Try enabling this if it does not work

So, I had to both uncomment it (remove the "#") and change the word "false" to "true" and that solved the first part of the problem.

It occurs to me that your xorg.conf might have been produced by any of several utilities. I used xac to make this one, then edited the line shown above.

I also changed the following:

Code:

Section "DRI"
#       Group 0
        Mode 0666
EndSection

since initially, the line "Group 0" was not commented out.

I hope this helps.
