Dumb question: how do I know when to go to which forum? I cannot get KDE or Xfce or twm to work on my user account, even though both work when I'm su'ed into root (which of course I know I generally don't want to do.)

I posted to the desktop environments area, but the help I've received still hasn't solved the issue; I still get an environment only as root...and yet I doubt that this is a PPC issue at all...can anyone here help? it seems to revolve around the interplay of .xinitrc (in /root/home and in /my_user_name/home) and rc.conf and /etc/X11/Sessions etc., etc.

Also, do I need x11-drm and libdrm? I have the latter, not the former...and am told I can't emerge it without rebuilding my kernel accordingly. Modularize or include?

I have so many questions. when I am root, and get xfce, all the kde apps are in my menus. is this what "support" means? in other words, if I had -kde on when compiling xfce, would they disappear? And how do I get the "-" flag, as in "-kde" in ufed? And if I put such things in by hand, say in make.conf, do I need quotes? or is something like "qt3 qt4 kde -gnome" good enough?

I am working hard to make gentoo work, I really find the general idea elegant. trying hard not to be swayed by current debate in Distrowatch and elsewhere.

thanks,

dave

well, ideally here should only be posted ppc related issues ( iow, ppc architecture issues)

I can´t help you with xfce or kde, but maybe you find something usefull here :
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/kde-config.xml
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xfce-config.xml

using the x11-drm package is recommended as it is way more updated than the in-kernel driver.
Libdrm is pulled in by xorg-x11 and you´ll need this for both drivers.

the best you can do is go to the official docs and read them. It´s really the only way to have an accurate system.

cheers
