BACKGROUND
A friend recently returned a G3 iMac that he had on long-term loan. I decided I would run it pretty much as a CLI machine to study for MySQL certification. I installed YellowDog Linux, but when the smoke had cleared, I found out the newest version of MySQL wasn't available on YDL.
I looked at Gentoo, but it seemed like an awful steep learning curve in addition to the MySQL preparation. I opted for Mac OS X.3, but running that on a 4GB hard drive has been a touch-and-go operation.

MY QUESTIONS
Are MySQL 5 and PHP 5 available in Gentoo PowerPPC?
I've used Redhat, Fedora, YellowDog, and Ubuntu Linux. Gentoo seems a totally different animal. I'm spoiled by using Ubuntu now and have no desire to return to spending 2 hours getting a Flash Drive to appear or 10 hours configuring a USB wireless wand. Should I stick with OS X, or is Gentoo a viable option?

The first time that I installed Gentoo and my box was working took me 30h...and for my laptop this year 10h.

I have been using Gentoo for 2 1/2 years.

Moved from Installing Gentoo to Gentoo on PPC. Will get better help in here since they know about PPC.

well, hard to answer, the best would be to make a backup and try yourself. Setup will take way more time than ubuntu for sure, but you will learn a lot about linux in general and your hardware and you will have a much more flexible linux installed. If these facts are not important for you and you just want to have a linux running asap, then yes, Ubuntu or any other that supports powerpc will do the job ( Ubuntu doesn´t support powerpc arches officialy anymore btw).

cheers
