I'm glad I could easily get sound working, something I was never able to do with Ubuntu, but the maximum volume is way too loud. As in, I'm afraid for the safety of my speakers. It'd be great if I could cap the maximum volume somehow so I didn't have to worry about me or someone else turning it up so high. How can this be accomplished?

Thanks,

Just fire up alsamixer, and set all the volume levels to a gain of or below 0 dB, then run `alsaconf store` as root.

After that, you should have all alsa apps use Master as the volume control by default.

Not exactly what you were looking for I'm sure, but it should do the job.

I'd also make sure you have RESTORE_ON_START="yes" and SAVE_ON_STOP="no" in /etc/conf.d/alsasound.

What kind of machine is this? It could be a bug in the drivers. If there's a DRC option, you could try changing it. This option helps to set keep the sound level more consistent.
