Hi all,

I'm running a gentoo/ppc 2007.0 on my Powerbook Alu G4. Do you know if it is safe to use preemption with gentoo-sources-2.6.22 ?
Does it make a desktop computer more "smooth" to use ?

Best regards,

Bruno.

should be safe (well I use it on my iMac G4 now). As for the smoothness your mileage may
vary depending on what you do.
Frankly I am not sure I reaped any benefits. But I don't do benchmarks either.

I've used it for 2 days under "heavy load" (compilation, movies, music ;) ) without any problem...

Seems to be ok.

Best regards,

Bruno.

It is definitely safe to use "Voluntary Preemption". It's probably safe to use the fully "Preemptible Kernel", but I haven't tried this in a long time. The previous issue with full preemption was that it worked fine most of the time, but occasionally corrupted things when under high load (say during a compile). These kinds of issues can be tricky to track down, which is why we suggested not using it. Personally, I don't see a difference between having it on and off, the new schedulers in 2.6 tend to show more improvement than preempt ever did.
