Hello. I have installed Gentoo on one of those ugly blue macintosh G3 computers.

After several days of compile time, I have a pretty decent desktop environment installed.

The last piece that refuses to slide into place is getting KDE to play mp3 and Ogg Vorbis files. Neither Juk nor noatun will play them. If I try to start them up, nothing happens (the song populates in the play list, and queues, but just refuses to play. The clock does not tick, and the slider is motionless).

Juk will not play wav (which may be normal), but noatun will.

Mp3 and Ogg files will play off the command line using mpg123 and ogg123.

I know what you are thinking, but YES, I had mp3, ogg and vorbis all in my compile flags long before I even installed KDE or any of its components.

My USE flags:
Code:
SE="X mp3 ogg alsa vorbis oggvorbis flac hal ppds opengl java arts fbcon avi cups mpeg doc flash gif gpm kde motif ncurses oggvorbis ogg openl pam perl png qt quicktime spell ssl truetype xscreensaver alsaoss ogg"

Code:
# emerge -pv arts noatun juk

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   ] kde-base/arts-3.5.5  USE="alsa* mp3* vorbis* -artswrappersuid -debug -esd -jack -kdeenablefinal -nas -xinerama" 945 kB
[ebuild   R   ] kde-base/noatun-3.5.7  USE="-debug -kdeenablefinal -xinerama" 0 kB
[ebuild   R   ] kde-base/juk-3.5.7  USE="arts flac mp3 vorbis -akode -debug -gstreamer -kdeenablefinal -xinerama" 0 kB

Any suggestions? Do these even play on PPC KDE?

Thanks!

G

The stars next to "alsa* mp3* vorbis*" indicate that it was previously compiled without support for these flags and but they are now set. You can use the --newuse option with portage to rebuild packages with new global flags after changing them. Perhaps something like "emerge world -Duv --newuse" would be appropriate.

thank you for the clarification there.

But... I *did* compile it with it, and I even did an emerge -uDpN world, and it said there was nothing to compile! (the "N" = newuse).

nevertheless, I will do as you suggest, and post back...

Okay...

recompiled arts with it, and that did fix it -- the question remains, however: Why didn't portage tell me that arts needed to be recompiled when I used emerge -uDpN? It *should* have done that...

Thanks for the heads up though! :)
