I've been using "-mcpu=7400 -O2 -pipe -maltivec -mabi=altivec", as recommended by the Safe CFLAG article on the wiki. Is there any reason to add -mtune?

I usually use -mtune instead of -mcpu so I can get binaries that tend to be able to be run on more than one CPU type. Since I have multiple machines, it's annoying when I build a binary that won't run on another machine. But -mcpu implies -mtune - so in your case it doesn't matter and superfluous to specify both.

It may not be unnecessary as sometimes -mcpu will be stripped from the CFLAGS by a package
but keeping -mtune is fine and won't be stripped. We had a thread on that subject some time
ago on this forum. I am not sure there is any similar issues on x86.
