Just started getting this warning during bootup:

* Loading key mappings:
KDSKBENT: invalid arument
Failed to bind key 0 to value 638
KDSKBENT: invalid arument
Failed to bind key 0 to value 638

Any ideas?

I haven't made any configuration changes to key mappings, etc.

I believe there were recent updates to keymaps.
I also just updated kernel 2.6.21 -> 2.6.22.

Same here, I started getting that after the recent handful of updates.

When I switched to the mac keymap, the problem went away.

[Edit]: Oops. no, it didn't -- don't do this.

Well, the error messages went away, but now I can't switch between virtual consoles. :?

For me, switching to the Mac keymap made my console unusable, as all mappings were mixed up. However, the error message disappeared.

You're right. How stupid of me -- I opened an xterm instead of checking it out in a tty. This also completely screws up my mappings. I've switched back to "us" and annotated my post above to help prevent anyone else from attempting that.

It seems harmless, but it would also seem to indicate there's at least one key improperly mapped.

I think this may be a bug with one of the many parts of sys-apps/kbd-1.13-r1, which recently went stable. That package owns the keymap files, loadkeys, etc. Downgrading back to 1.12 eliminates the warning message.

I've filed a bug, but this is low priority because it doesn't break anything (that I know of).
My advice is to ignore it, and we'll eventually see kbd-1.13-r5 or something with the wrinkles ironed out.

Added myself to the CC list as I am having the same error with the exact same keycode (638) The problem lies in line 59 of /etc/init.d/keymaps. If you comment it out the issue disappears, but then you defeat the purpose of line 59. Could someone post line 59 on the bug and I'll comment.

[edit]The poster above needs to edit the URL so that the bug shows instead of the main page.

Line 59 seems to be blank in my /etc/init.d/keymaps:
Code:

    53          # Set terminal encoding to either ASCII or UNICODE.
    54          # See utf-8(7) for more information.
    55          local termencoding="" termmsg=""
    56          if [[ ${UNICODE} == "yes" ]] ; then
    57                  local dumpkey_opts=""
    58                  [[ -n ${DUMPKEYS_CHARSET} ]] && dumpkey_opts="-c ${DUMPKEYS_CHARSET}"
    59
    60                  dumpkeys ${dumpkey_opts} | loadkeys --unicode
    61                  termencoding=$'\033%G'
    62                  termmsg="UTF-8"
    63          else

If it's not too much trouble, could you please indicate which line you're referring to? :)

I posted an updated ebuild to bugzilla if anyone wants to use it (in a local overlay). You just put it in /usr/local/portage/sys-apps/kbd, and you add the following to make.conf:
PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage"

This problem appears to have returned in sys-apps/kbd-1.15.1 with USE="nls" on a us keyboard setting.

Did you submit a bug, or reopen the old one?

Added a comment to the old bug requesting a reopen, mentioning version number, USE flags and the fact that I'm on ~x86
