I am trying to get gentoo onto an old world ibook (g3 300Mhz) with 288 MB of ram. It has an ati ragemobility video card in it.

I have followed the handbook and installed bootx and copied the 2 files from the installation cd (2007.1 32bit ppc).
I am using the newest version of bootx(1.2.2). These are the settings I am using:
kernel args: "cdroot root=/dev/ram0 init=linuxrc loop=image.squashfs looptype=squashfs console=tty0 video=ofonly"
kernel: apple
ramdisk size: 32768
force video settings: checked
use specified ram disk: checked (apple.igz)

I have tried many combinations of kernel args: nodevfs, udev, and the different video options.

Each time I click the linux button, the screen goes blank and stays that way even if I let it sit for several minutes.

Any help would be appreciated.

All iBooks should be new world machines, so follow the new-world instructions for that machine.

Wow, I feel quite silly now. I somehow got the impression that the 1st generation of ibooks was old world. So, I didn't even read the new world part and press 'C' at boot time. Doh.

Thank you for the information.
