i ever searched here but got nothing constructive.

error message is like this:

Code:
(...blah blah blah...)
checking build system type... powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu
checking host system type... powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu
checking for dlopen in -ldl... yes
checking for PACKAGE... configure: error: The pkg-config script could not be found or is too old.  Make sure it
is in your PATH or set the PKG_CONFIG environment variable to the full
path to pkg-config.

Alternatively, you may set the environment variables PACKAGE_CFLAGS
and PACKAGE_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.
See the pkg-config man page for more details.

To get pkg-config, see <http://www.freedesktop.org/software/pkgconfig>.
See `config.log' for more details.

!!! Please attach the following file when filing a report to bugs.gentoo.org:
!!! /var/tmp/portage/app-laptop/pbbuttonsd-0.8.1-r2/work/pbbuttonsd-0.8.1/config.log
 *
 * ERROR: app-laptop/pbbuttonsd-0.8.1-r2 failed.
 * Call stack:

 * If you need support, post the topmost build error, and the call stack if relevant.
 * A complete build log is located at '/var/tmp/portage/app-laptop/pbbuttonsd-0.8.1-r2/temp/build.log'.
 *

and...
Code:
# emerge -pv pkgconfig

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   ] dev-util/pkgconfig-0.21-r1  USE="-hardened" 976 kB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 976 kB
# pkg-config --version
0.21

so no doubt the path to pkg-config is exactly in PATH, right? does it mean that this version has been too old? but pkgconfig-0.22 is still in ~ppc currently whereas pbbuttonsd-0.8.1-r2 has been marked as stable. :roll:

[updated] odd...
i solved this via set PKG_CONFIG to /usr/bin/pkg-config, which is originally null.
anyone thinks this is a general bug, from the perspective of an ordinary user like me?
or just i'm in a special case?

Maybe it can be considered not to be bug since it is a /etc settings problem. I am not sure.[/bug] I added this to /etc/paludis/bashrc :

Code:
export PKG_CONFIG=/usr/bin/pkg-config
