Hi,

has anyone got any interesting ideas for a Phd proposal?

My uni has a big gravity wave research team so I was thinking about developing a some analysis software to utilise the SPE's, but it looks like these guys have got there first:

Currently messing about with some meteor detection and molecular interaction programs, but I'd be gratefull if anyone had any good ideas?

I swear, writing a good Phd proposal has gotta be harder than actually doing the Phd. :P

Maybe you should see what projects have been proposed recently to some of the supercomputer labs. You might find something interesting that was rejected because it's too small for them to bother with.

Go lurk and see what ideas you get or contacts you can develop.

If it were me, I'd start with Lawrence Livermore's ASC program office (runs "the Blue Gene L" project). The ASC have a web site and discussion forums: https://publicaffairs.llnl.gov/news/asc/

You might rather start with something closer to home like the guys at University of Edinborough:

As far as personal ideas, find somebody doing string theory / m-theory research and if they have a modeling / simulation need, see if you can collaborate.

TerraSoft sells kits for building PS3 and Cell clusters, you might find some of their information interesting.

I presume you've heard of the new roadrunner computer at Los Alamos where every node has cells as accelerators

There's lots and lots of scientific computing going on for the cell here.
