Hello,
I've got an ibook G3 with OS X and want to try Gentoo on this machine. But before erasing everything, I want to backup the whole disk.
How could I do this?
My PC has a Firewire card, if I start the Mac in target mode and connect them together, is it possible to do a dd of the disk? I think it will be ok, but the real question is: is it possible to restore it with the same method?
Or is there another simple way to save the full OS?
Thx,
Max

Oupsss,
problem, sbp2 doesn't like the iBook, my external FW disk works, but the iBook not, here are the errors when I plug the iBook:
Code:
Nov 30 21:58:29 waha firewire_core: phy config: card 0, new root=ffc1, gap_count=5
Nov 30 21:58:30 waha scsi5 : SBP-2 IEEE-1394
Nov 30 21:58:30 waha firewire_core: created new fw device fw1 (0 config rom retries)
Nov 30 21:58:30 waha firewire_sbp2: logged in to sbp2 unit fw1.0 (0 retries)
Nov 30 21:58:30 waha firewire_sbp2:  - management_agent_address:    0xfffff0030000
Nov 30 21:58:30 waha firewire_sbp2:  - command_block_agent_address: 0xfffff0040000
Nov 30 21:58:30 waha firewire_sbp2:  - status write address:        0x000100000000
Nov 30 21:58:35 waha firewire_sbp2: sbp2_scsi_abort
Nov 30 21:58:45 waha firewire_sbp2: sbp2_scsi_abort
Nov 30 21:58:45 waha scsi 5:0:0:0: scsi: Device offlined - not ready after error recovery

I've tested with the 2 ieee1394 drivers, standard and alternative stack (the above message comes with the alternative).
Any idea?
Thanks.

edit: Error is not only with the iBook, the external FW disk has already the problem, seems to be the ieee1394 driver...
