Hello, this is my first post on these forums, i am new to linux and decided to install it on my ps3 so i can play some super nintendo and mame games. installing it on my PS3 for the first time was probably a bad idea, but it looked so awesome, i could not resist.

So here is my problem. I get to the part where i need stage4, and i do not have a wired connection, so i need to download it on my computer and put it on a memory stick. but none of the guides i have read tell me how to install it without using the wget command, all it says is to move it to the /mnt/gentoo folder, but i have no idea how to go about doing that. i changed the directory to /mnt/gentoo and it says

livecd # gentoo :

or something along those lines. sorry if this is not descriptive enough, i am completely new to linux besides using a live cd on my computer once or twice.

thanks for the help, much appreciated!

first you'll have to make a mounting point where the memory stick will be

Code:
mkdir /mnt/memstick

next type dmesg and see where the device is, and what it's label is, such as sdc1, sdd1, sdf1, etc, the 3rd letter may chage

so use, for example if it's /dev/sdc1

Code:
mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/memstick

then you can copy the stage4 file, while in livecd # gentoo:

Code:
cp /mnt/memstick/stage4-970-ps3_32ul.tar.bz2 /

the backslash should send it right into your current directory, which is gentoo

then just go on with the tar -xjpf stuff

I am having the same problem, this is what I did;

This is what I typed:

livecd gentoo # cp /mnt/memstick/stage4-970-ps3_32ul.tar.bz2 /

This is what I got:

cp: writing `/stage4-970-ps3_32ul.tar.bz2` : no space left on device

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Code:
cp /mnt/memstick/stage4-970-ps3_32ul.tar.bz2 /

Will most copy the stage4 to the root directory, which is most likely a ramdisk, not the current directory.

Code:
cp /mnt/memstick/stage4-970-ps3_32ul.tar.bz2 ./

Will copy to the current directory (note the dot before the forward slash), which I am assuming is /mnt/gentoo/

if you are able to mount your usb stick, I tend to do the following which assumes you have partitioned your ps3 disk and mounted it as /mnt/gentoo as the directions state.

cd /mnt/gentoo
tar -xjpf /mnt/memorystick/stage4-<whatever>

when it gets to kboot: did you hit tab until you got your tv settings right? If not just find your settings ie: 1080p, 420i, etc. then hit enter it'll stay blue for a second and then it should move on.
