im having troubles with the alsa scripts on my alubook for a few months. I thought it maybe was some weird kernel/userspace mismatch, but i dont see this go away so maybe someone knows whats going on.

Alsa works after booting but cant be stopped accurately nor restarted. The first time you try to stop it, it just hangs and the second time :

Quote:
(/root)-(18:2,1Gb)-->stop alsasound
* Storing ALSA Mixer Levels ... [ ok ]
* Killing processes using ALSA ... [ ok ]
* Unloading ALSA modules ...
ERROR: Removing 'snd_aoa_codec_tas': Device or resource busy
/etc/init.d/alsasound: line 95: 24967 Segmentation Fault rmmod --wait "$1"
ERROR: Removing 'snd_aoa_fabric_layout': Device or resource busy
ERROR: Removing 'snd_aoa': Resource temporarily unavailable
ERROR: Removing 'snd': Resource temporarily unavailable
ERROR: Removing 'snd_aoa_fabric_layout': Device or resource busy
ERROR: Removing 'snd_aoa_fabric_layout': Device or resource busy
ERROR: Removing 'snd_aoa': Resource temporarily unavailable
ERROR: Removing 'snd_aoa_fabric_layout': Device or resource busy
ERROR: Removing 'snd_aoa_fabric_layout': Device or resource busy
ERROR: Removing 'snd_aoa': Resource temporarily unavailable
ERROR: Removing 'snd': Resource temporarily unavailable

after this alsa is apparently unusuable :

Quote:
(/root)-(18:2,1Gb)-->start alsasound
* Loading ALSA modules ...
* Loading: snd-seq ... [ ok ]
* Restoring Mixer Levels ...
alsactl: load_state:1341: Cannot find soundcard '0'...
* Errors while restoring defaults, ignoring

although all needed modules are loaded again.
Right now im using latest alsa* stuff from portage and kernel 2.6.24-rc3 but as said, this is happening for a few months, since i switched to the new snd_aoa driver ... iirc. Also, im using latest (masked ) baselayout, but it works just fine on another g4 ibook, no alsa problems there.

any hint ?

TIA

Do you have any media players or mixer applications started? I could think of an application that still uses the device, when you try to restart alsasound.

thanks for your quick answer :)

yes, that was my first guess too. I thought pbbuttonsd was the one to blame but apparently it wasnt ... and i dont think i have any other app listening to alsa, no sound daemons and such stuff here, plain fluxbox.
Is there someway to know what apps are still calling alsa ?

edit :

have just realized that i have this now in my logs ( in case it helps) :

Hi all, i'm having an apparently similar problem.
When i shutdown my mac mini it hangs at "Unloading Alsa modules".
I'm using snd-aoa compiled as a module in 2.6.22-gentoo-r5 and sound works (it let me aplay wavs). The problem seems to be in the alsasound script. Indeed, it hangs even if i try to stop it manually:

macmini-g4 ~ # /etc/init.d/alsasound --verbose stop

On the same machine this does not happen under Debian/Ubuntu.
On gentoo i'm a total newbie, but could the line below indicate a bug?

/etc/init.d/alsasound: line 95: 5370 Segmentation fault rmmod --wait "$1" [ !! ]

ok, this is now bug 201109. As it looks like a script issue, gentoo´s bugzilla looked like the right place to me.

cheers

It hangs on me at unloading alsa modules about 30% of the time when shutting down or restarting. Running ~x86 using hda-intel I think on nforce430.
