Hey all,

I've been trying to compile a custom kernel for days. I've tried all sorts of kernels, one from the GRP archives, the cell overlay one, Geoff's kernel and none of them would boot. Then this morning I had a crazy idea, rather than have kboot point to the new initrd image I just created with mkinitrd, I would just leave it at the old initrd image. Sure enough my kernel booted (cell overlay version btw).

So now my question becomes why in mkinitrd not giving me a bootable initrd image? It is latest version from portage (3.5.7-rc3 iirc). I executed the command as such in /usr/src/linux after compiling: mkinitrd initrd.img 2.6.23 and then copied initrd.img into the /boot/ folder.

Another question: Any bad side effects from using the old initrd?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Hmm, no idea why it doesn't work, but you can actually create your own initrd - it's just basically a filesystem image (I believe optionally gzip compressed) - squashfs is nice if you don't need to write to it.
