(Preface: I'm completely new to Linux, for all intents and purposes. I know some stuff about it, but it hasn't helped me so far.)

I've been interested in putting Linux on my iBook lately, so I figured I'd try out a live CD version. Picked up a copy of Gentoo's 2007.0 live CD last night and popped it in my iBook. I ran across a few issues. For now I'm most concerned about getting X running and my wireless networking running. X fails to detect screens and puts out the following errors:

Code:
(EE) Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libGLcore.so
(EE) Failed to load module "GLcore" (loader failed, 7)
(EE) Failed to load module "ati" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) No drivers available

Fatal server error:
no screens found

In the boot sequence, just after setting up gdm, the system attempts to load the Broadcom 43xx drivers, but puts out the following pair of error messages three times:

Code:
bcm43xx: Error: Microcode "bcm43xx_microcode5.fw" not available or load failed.
bcm43xx: core_up for active 802.11 core failed (-2)

I haven't got the slightest clue as to how to fix these errors and would greatly appreciate any help. From the looks of it, only one of the error codes X throws has occurred for anyone else on these forums, but it resulted in a different failure mode for X. I got no hits on the broadcom side of things.

Last I heard, we cannot distribute the needed drivers to cut firmware from for bcm43xx (which is b43 now, check the sticky thread in this forum) for legal reasons. I was not aware that the 2007.0 disc tried to load bcm43xx. Have you actually begun your install, or was this all using the liveCD? If so, which livecd? I believe PPC's 2007.0 was only an install cd without X...

The ISO I downloaded was from http://torrents.gentoo.org/ - specifically the one labeled "livecd-ppc-installer-2007.0". I thought the live CDs functioned as both temporary OSes and installers (that's what I could gather from the Gentoo site).

As for the b'com stuff, I will be sure to read the entire thread later. Thanks for the tip there!

Well, you probably do not have to read the entire thread. The first post should be enough for your initial install.

I am not sure where the livecd came from, but you should still be able to continue and install Gentoo. You will have wireless and X, just not until you actually install it on your system.
