Hi, all,

I followed this link http://overlays.gentoo.org/proj/cell/wiki/InstallGentooOnPS3 to install Gentoo on PS3 without problem, but I have 4 questions here, wish someone could enlighten me (pardon me if these are already answered):

1. After reboot, when I try to install binary package as instructed in the link, I have following error:

emerge -G mplayer
Calculating dependencies \Fetching binary packages info...
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/emerge", line 6518, in ?
retval = emerge_main()

filelist = dir_get_list(baseurl, conn)

page,rc,msg = make_http_request(conn,address,params,headers)

response = conn.getresponse()

line = self.fp.readline()
File "/usr/lib/python2.4/socket.py", line 317, in readline
data = recv(1)
socket.error: (104, 'Connection reset by peer')

The make.conf file looks as follows:

# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically
# built this stage.
# Please consult /etc/make.conf.example for a more detailed example.
CFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -mcpu=970 -mtune=970 -mabi=altivec"
CXXFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -mcpu=970 -mtune=970 -mabi=altivec"
# This should not be changed unless you know exactly what you are doing. You
# should probably be using a different stage, instead.
# WARNING: Changing your CHOST is not something that should be done lightly.
# Please consult http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/change-chost.xml before changing it.
CHOST="powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu"
USE="altivec X fbcon"
PORTAGE_BINHOST="http://ftp-atl.osuosl.org/pub/gentoo-ps3/grp32/All/"
FEATURES="parallel-fetch"

I confirm I have no problem ping the server from PS3:

# ping ftp-atl.osuosl.org

2. How can I go back to game os? boot-game-os from kboot doesn't seem to work. I have to force reboot the server until I hear 3 beeps and it reset display and come back to game os.

3. Any link can show us how to configure media player, eg. codec, mplayer, vlc, etc. and how to configure them for smooth playback?

4. Has anyone installed the spu_fbdev driver http://psubuntu.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5985 under Gentoo? How is your feedback?

Sorry for posting so many questions.

Thanks in advance.

#1 Last time I saw anything like this, portage was the culprit. I wonder if there is a regression for binary packages. Could you confirm your version of portage for us (equery -l portage) or emerge --info.

#2 ps3-boot-game-os

#3 & #4 - If I were you, I would jump onto #gentoo-ppc64 and discuss these with unsolo. He is teh resident expert on mplayer.

Thanks for your reply, I confirm ps3-boot-game-os is able to boot into XMB without problem.

The portage version I'm using is as follows:

$ emerge --version
Portage 2.1.3.19 (default-linux/ppc/ppc64/2007.0/32bit-userland/desktop/970, gcc-4.1.2, glibc-2.6.1-r0, 2.6.23-ps3 ppc64)

Do I need to downgrade it or something?

Thanks again for your help.
