I'm wondering what would be the best environment to use for a beige G3 running at 350mhz (overclocked from 300) 320MB RAM. I'm looking for one that would be kinda light I guess because this machine doesnt exactly have a ton of power to spare if you get my drift. Any suggestions and then where I can obtain them would be awesome. thanks

I'd suggest XFCE if you want a complete desktop environment. Otherwise, a minimal window manager like fluxbox works great. I use fluxbox on my 8500/180 with a G3 upgrade card. :)

I actually have downloaded Xfce and I am going to attempt installing it. I'm new to linux so I do have a few questions. I've read a few things about X11. Is that required to run ANY desktop environment or just certain ones. I've tried emerging gnome but it always seems to want to download things from ftp://(various addresses here) and even following the install manual and configuring my network adapter (pci ethernet card, works fine w/mac os9 for internet access) and the proxy server (export http_proxy, export ftp_proxy) I am unable to get a good ping response from anything other than the machine that runs the proxy server software. Hence, I am currently in the process of emerge --usepkg kdebase as that was another suggestion given to a user with similar hardware as mine. I guess I will see if that works and if there are any problems along the way I will post as a reply to this. thx

I've got my network configured and working with the proxy server fine now and am nearly done with the installation of X. Afterwards I will be adding Xfce 4.4.2 and hopefully will have a working desktop soon. thanks for the help

Hello,
Xserver is only the the graphical support for programs which are able to create graphic output. after installation you need a Windowmanager, which handles all the programs running parallel, or a complete desktop envirenment (gnome, kde). For Windowmanager I prefer icewm, the configuration is very easy. I start the session thru kdm but it is possible that kdm takes a lot of your RAM, maybe you should deal with qingy, over uvesafb, or a direct starting after login without any loginmanager. I have installed a complete kde but I use some of the components only under icewm, (krusader, kword, krename). A kde session makes my powerbook G4 very slow. If there are questions don't hesitate to ask. I have since two weeks my powerbook under gentoo running, and most things are working....
