Okay, this is my first post here...
I've got this old G3 slot-loading Imac. I upgraded the ram to 512MB. I have been interested in linux for a while, so I decided to install Gentoo on this old computer. It didn't have Internet, so I downloaded the Universal Install CD, and decided to try it out. Unfortunately, I have encountered numerous errors along the way. I will be referring to the gentoo ppc networkless install guide periodically.
1st error:
In section 5 b of the guide, it says to extract the stage tarball by entering
"# tar xvjpf /mnt/cdrom/stages/stage3-ppc-2007.0.tar.bz2" and it proceeds without error. Next, however, in the guide it tells me to unpack the stage tarball by entering :
# tar xvjpf stage3-*.tar.bz2
but when I enter this, I get something to the effect of "this cannot be found" or something like that.

So what I tried to do is to skip this stage, and proceed, and it goes fine until I reach genkernel. I enter:
"genkernel all" and the install seems to go well until it suddenly stops and tells me that it cannot compile the module or something like that. So again I simply ignore and proceed, but when I finish, it tells me it cannot boot becuase the kernel is corrupt or something like that.
What is wrong?

Hi, to be able to use this command, you need to do this

Code:

# cd /mnt/cdrom/stages/
# tar xvjpf stage3-*.tar.bz2

The tar command need to be in the right path, so the cd command will but you threre.
