Hello, I'm trying to install gentoo on a G4 powerbook with a non functioning CD drive.
I've been following the instructions at http://gentoo-wiki.com/LiveUSB_on_PPC to try and boot from an external usb drive but have hit problems.
After altering the first line of yaboot.conf to

device=usb0/disk@1:

and booting from openfw with

boot usb0/disk@1:3,\\yaboot

i get to the gentoo livecd welcome and am presented with

WARNING: Bootstrap partition type is wrong: "Apple_HFS"
type should be: "Apple_Bootstrap"

boot:

if i then boot with

apple

things seem to progress happily enough and after copious output i get

No bootable medium found. Waiting for devices

followed by

>> Determing root device...
!! The root block device is unspecified or not detected.
Please specify a device to boot, or "shell" for a shell
boot() ::

I've tried a few things such as /dev/ram0 but don't really know what I'm doing and have got a little stuck.
Any ideas?

Thanks

Rich

In case anyone else runs into this same problem, the advice you are given is correct: it should be "Apple_Bootstrap", not "Apple_HFS". I think the Debian guide is more accurate.
