I am trying to install OSX 10.3.5 in mac on linux and find myself unable to complete the install. The installer works without any issues right to the point where it say "examining package contents" (after checking the DVD MD5) where it then stalls indefinitely without the progress bar advancing. The virtual machine stays up though, I can still move around the window, access the menu etc. Mol consumes a constant ~3% CPU at this time and takes some 145 MB of memory. The installer log doesn't show anything suspicious, a few harmless looking errors happening during boot, an error decoding a tiff, and messages on starting und completing a "preflight" script for every selected package. The package selection doesn't seem to have any influence on the problem, as well as language or disk settings.

The physical machine is a Powermac G4 with 512MB RAM and a Sonnet 1.33 GHz CPU upgrade, and the mol settings are esentially the defaults with a 8GB image file for the disk and a USB DVD burner as optical drive. A have also tried disabling altivec to no avail. I am running gentoo-sources-2.6.23-r8 and mol 0.9.27.1, the rest of the system is gentoo stable.

Try increasing MOL's RAM usage to 256Mb.

1) I would appreciate if you could create a new thread instead of hijacking an existing one concerning a different problem ;)

2) You are compiling against a rather new kernel (2.6.23), try using the ~ppc version of mol. Additionally, this also won't compile out of the box, you'll have to apply a patch to mol (can be found on the gentoo tracker) and another small change to the kernel sources (can be found on the mol tracker).

if you mean mol-0.9.72.1: well it is ~ppc

also there is this issue http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1763167&group_id=179078&atid=887701
Quote:

Summary:
mol.ko has symbol errors with 2.6.23 Private: (?)
No
building the modules gives:

WARNING: "handle_mm_fault" [/usr/src/modules/mol/kmod/mol.ko] undefined!

Loading mol gives:

insmod /lib/modules/2.6.23-rc1-git6-aragorn/extra/mol.ko
mol: Unknown symbol handle_mm_fault
FATAL: Error inserting mol

with this temporary workaround
Quote:

As a temporary workaround until there's a real fix, patching the kernel to
export handle_mm_fault might work. The function is identical in 2.6.22.15
(still exported) and 2.6.23.12 (not exported anymore). I'll give that a
try after my next reboot.

You just need to add:

EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL(handle_mm_fault);

to mm/memory.c, right under the definition of the function. Should be
around line 2660 or so.

where is the patch you are talking about ?

1) Oh, sorry, well, in this case, I am very happy to assist you in the process of assisting me :)

2) Yepp, sorry, I thought you tried to emerge the ppc stable version (0.9.72 without the dangling .1). The kernel quirk you linked is indeed the one I was talking about (and applied), and the necessary patch can be found at https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=199294 . Basically, you just need to add an additional include in the correct place.

3) I am under the impression that the problem I am experiencing may be connected to the SCSI (USB it is) DVD reader I am using. If I don't specify it as a block device and just let mol decide to export it as a SCSI device, the VM spits out a error "SCSI queue cmd: cannot allocate memory" it the very point it stalls. I have tried to disable SCSI autoprobing and explicitely exported the associated block device as an optical drive (/dev/sr0), but this causes the same stall (without the aforementioned error). I also tried to read the DVD to an image file and use this as an install medium, but specifying it as an optical drive gives an ioctl error saying this is (obviously) no optical drive, and treating it as a hard disk image causes the installer to crash at approximately the same point, but in a different way: the installation screen is replaced by the blue-in-blue screen with the gray wheelish thing spinning at the bottom forever.

Thank you alot for trying to reproduce this on your machine, ddc. It may be my particular version or indeed my drive. Did you install the system from CD or DVD, and did you use your internal ATAPI drive or an external one?

my macOS 10.3 is the first release of Panther and it is composed by 3 CD (650Mb each)
the powerbook where i installed MOL + macOSX 10.3 has an internal cd/dvd reader (from the linux devices point of view /dev/cdrom is a link to /dev/hdc ... so we can understand it is an internal ATAPI device)

may this help you
