Either I'm doing something wrong, skipping a step or my IBM power3 doesn't play well with bootstrapping.

I'm trying to use distcc to speed up my install of 2007.0 on my IBM ppc64 using an identical IBM with Gentoo already installed and current. What I've done so far is this:

I got to the point where I chroot into /mnt/gentoo. I edited my make.conf and emerged distcc with the parameters specified in the "bootstrapping with distcc" section. I ran the appropriate path and configurations with distcc-config. I believe I had the network up at the time. When I try to start distcc, the computer either locks up or restarts. I'm using a serial port for the install since GXT video cards don't like Linux. I'm actually using the other IBM for the serial port connection (ssh'ed from my PC).

What could be causing my problems? Do I need to run the bootstrap script? I figured that was just for working with stage1 and 2.

I've read all the documentation but still don't feel like I'm getting all the steps in the right order. Could someone give me a unified step-by-step or some idea of what I'm missing?

Thanks,

i normally run distcc between all the boxes i have at home to help my slow powerbook to build stuff.

- install distcc in all hosts
- setup /etc/conf.d/distccd ( specially the --allow and --listen switches are important)
- add distcc to the FEATURES entry in your make.conf
- setup the hosts you want to distribute the work ( you can do this with distcc-config, /etc/distcc/hosts file or just export the hostnames you need)
- start the daemon and add it to some runlevel if you want it to start at next startup

FYI, there´s also a avahi USE in ~arch versions of distcc that will automagically discover all hosts running distcc and distribute as needed.
Also, if you don´t see any network traffic, turn on the verbose mode in distcc and keep an eye on the logs to know whats going on.

hope that helps

cheers

I guess I should be more clear.

The problem I'm having is using distcc to "bootstrap" an install. Distcc doesn't seem to want to work in the chroot environment. I was wondering is there is something I'm not doing that will get it to work in the chroot environment. On a full install it works just fine. The key is that I'm trying to use it to speed up an install.
