If you use KDE, I recommend ark and install the unrar package.

just in case it isn´t clear, you don´t need kde/gnome for that, just emerge unrar as d2_racing said.

cheers

I filed a bug report to get the PPC64 keyword added to RAR as unstable, but was told the request was invalid. Nevermind, I modified the e-build to install it and it worked.

It was marked as invalid because unrar is already marked ppc/ppc64 stable. Why did you need to change anything?

I guess I didn't see unrar as being stable. I may have just assumed that rar is what I needed, since that's what I've used before. I don't know.

No worries, I was just trying to figure out why you were having problems! rar is a binary build and there's no ppc/ppc64 version. This is why your bug report was closed. As far as I know, there's no way to make .rar files on powerpc at the moment, just unpack them.

That makes sense. I really only wanted it for unpacking anyways. I'd use bunzip if I wanted to compress something.

Try 7zip instead; It's slower than rar but has better compression, esp. if you have lots of large similar files. The only major thing it doesn't have is RAR's corruption resistance.
