I have a working 44P-170 power3 running Gentoo 2007.0 that I started from a 2006.1 installation disc. I had it installed on two other 44P's from the same install disc. Since then, I've learned how to use a serial line as a terminal and tried installing on one of the 44P's using the 2007.0 install cd. I don't know why, but I can't get a fresh install to boot anymore. I don't know if there was an update to yaboot-static or what, but as far as I can tell, every other part of my setup that I used on my first install is the same.

When I get to the open firmware boot, this is roughly what I see:

Quote:
RS/6000RS/6000RS/6000RS/6000RS/6000RS/6000RS/6000RS/6000
RS/6000RS/6000RS/6000RS/6000RS/6000RS/6000RS/6000RS/6000
RS/6000RS/6000RS/6000RS/6000RS/6000RS/6000RS/6000RS/6000
RS/6000RS/6000RS/6000RS/6000RS/6000RS/6000RS/6000RS/6000

! 20EE000B !

and then it reboots.

I'm currently trying this with a GXT-4500 installed, but I really don't think that has anything to do with it, since the install cd boots. I just had Debian installed on it and it booted with that. Debian used a ramdisk, perhaps I need to use one on my Gentoo install? Anyways, yaboot.chrp just isn't getting it done.

I looked up error code [! 20EE000B !] in the service manual and it's an error meaning "no valid boot device found". I did manage to boot by making a yaboot.chrp from the working computer and copying it to the target computer.
Code:
livecd# ssh root@192.xxx.xxx.xxx
ibm_left# dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/home/user/yaboot.chrp
ibm_left# exit
livecd# scp root@192.xxx.xxx.xxx:/home/user/yaboot.chrp .
livecd# dd if=/root/yaboot.chrp of=/dev/sda1

Do I need to file a bug report on this?

What are possible causes of a failed boot partition that previously had a working Linux distro on? Would I still need to create an empty DOS partition first?

I guess I can try it out on my third RS/6000. If not, I'll probably file a bug report.
