When I try to install Starcraft, the installer seems to just stop as its copying the files from the CD - always at a specific point. The program still responds, though. Any ideas?

Starcraft works fine for me with wine. Always try wine first before resorting to cedega.

I tried Wine, and IIRC that's why I tried Cedega in the first place...

I'm not sure, since Starcraft is pretty old already your CD might have seen a little wear and tear. Maybe try another drive or try cleaning the bottom of the disc with a clean soft cloth and a little water (depending on how badly smudged it might be).

StarCraft installs fine for me. You could try copying the data to disk as an ISO, and then looping the ISO and installing from there; that will tell you whether or not your disk is bad.

This is what I get:
Code:
blue# dd if=/dev/cdrom of=./starcraft.iso
dd: reading `/dev/cdrom': Input/output error
1160416+0 records in
1160416+0 records out
594132992 bytes (594 MB) copied, 175.575 s, 3.4 MB/s

Is there anyway to pinpoint phisically where on the CD it fails? it might help with to find and fix the defect...

Either put down $10 for a new StarCraft CD, or put down $15 for a CD/DVD hand-cranked resurfacer.
