This depends on your system. Depending on how you compile your kernel, you might not even be able to use your usb ;-)
What does you /etc/fstab look like?

I installed it on PS3. My Fstab looks like this

/dev/ps3da1 / ext3 noatime 0 1
/dev/ps3da2 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,ro 0 0
/dev/sdc1 /mnt/memstick auto noauto 0 0

# NOTE: The next line is critical for boot!
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0

# glibc 2.2 and above expects tmpfs to be mounted at /dev/shm for
# POSIX shared memory (shm_open, shm_unlink).
# (tmpfs is a dynamically expandable/shrinkable ramdisk, and will
# use almost no memory if not populated with files)
shm /dev/shm tmpfs nodev,nosuid,noexec 0 0
none /spu spufs default 0 0

Got it working. I am not sure if it is suppose to do so or not, but whats happening is when I connect external harddisk it shows up on /dev/sda5/ and when I connect USB flash disk it shows up on /dev/sda1/
Another thing is that its not automounting.

It will not automount unless you've installed the programs and kernel support necessary for automounting. A program like ivman: http://ivman.sourceforge.net/ can do what you're looking for.
