|I've experienced that problem before and believe it's universal to all wine programs.
I think that's built-in protection of wine (sort of like a chroot) so that it overrun and destroy your system (you are running windows programs after all).
Maybe a reasonable workaround is to launch winecfg and map your home folder or whatever as another drive (like F:/).
Gentoo is the stick-shift of Linux.
You work it manually, it has somewhat better performance, but it's really for the fun of it.
