I tried installing the stage3 2008.0_beta1 tarball on my PowerMac G5, and after updating portage and emerging some pkgs I ran into the age-old "gcc - C compiler can't create executables error".

Just wondering if anyone else can verify that.

I'm using the 2008.0 PPC64 livecd and I got the tarball from distfiles.gentoo.org.

Thanks.

In addition to what JoseJX asked, I would like to know if you used the portage snapshot or sync'd to the live tree. The live tree may have had a couple of problems in in wrt the profile itself.

It was a portage snapshot from 2 days ago (sometime around midnight -- 04/22/2008) that I synced up to the latest version.

I have a (semi) live system that I'm working with using 2007.1, so let me tarball and squashfs that sucker, then see if I can reproduce the issue again with 2008.0_beta1.

Yeah, that really smells like a bug that was in profile. The profiles are honestly still being hammered out. There is significant change in the powerpc profiles for 2008; namely a lot more inheritance. So, be patient as we resolve them.
