I have installed Gentoo on the PS3 - seemed OK. However on reboot it stops at the kboot prompt. Still running and responding to kboot commands but not progressing into booting Gentoo.

I used a PS3 version of my usual partitioning scheme of ps3da1 - boot, ps3da2 - swap, ps3da3 - root. I notice that the HOWTO uses a single boot/root partition and a swap. Is this significant? Can kboot get at the root partition?

In particular can kboot see its .conf file when that is in /etc on the root partition (3) and it is booting from partition 1?

Before I rebuild the lot I was hoping for advice.

Tim.

Yeah, disk partitioning is simplified for a reason. kboot looks for it's configuration file in a partition labeled '/'. Which partition do you have labeled '/' (using e2label).

Thanks for coming back to me.

I probably messed up the labelling. The HOWTO said label the /root as / - so I labelled my ps3da3 partition as /. Then I decided that it might need the kernel image file so I changed it to ps3da1! Maybe it would have worked if I had stayed with my first setup.

Anyway it was no big deal to reformat so I am doing EXACTLY what I am told now! I have partitioned into 1 big bootable root partition and some swap space and I am starting again.

Thanks again.

It is all working now.

I used just 2 partitions: one big root/boot partition and a 1.6G swap space at the end.

Labelled partition 1 as /.

Followed the HOWTO http://overlays.gentoo.org/proj/cell/wiki/InstallGentooOnPS3 and it all works wonderfully. I must say that you developers have done a great job here with the PS3: once I followed the instructions properly it was the cleanest install I have ever had - 2 hours from an empty hard disk to the BBC website on Mozilla.

I got the PS3 for Blu-Ray and the ability to put the BBC iPlayer on my living room HD TV. We are still waiting for the BBC and Flash to finish the job - but it will come. This is a great opportunity for Linux. The standard hardware involved must mean that a single install disk using downloads cannot be far away.

Anyway - thanks very much.
