One of the main things I wanted to use my rs6000s for was converting video with ffmpeg. I've read that the CFLAG option "-ffast-math" will help speed up ffmpeg some, but break other things. Is it possible to emerge just one package with a CFLAG not included in the make.conf file?

Well, I set that up for ffmpeg and python. It worked for the emerge. I can't say that ffmpeg works, though. I think I'm changing too many things at the same time. Since the machines I'm doing all this on are so slow, I've started messing around with "optimizations". I have plenty of RAM so I've switched to "-O3". I also emerged gcc-4.2. I read somewhere that -mcpu=power3 was fixed in 4.2 so I decided I would take that risk as well. These things really aren't being used for anything, so I'm not doing any damage if I break them. It's all part of my efforts to learn. Hopefully, I'll get to where I can convert video with an optimized ffmpeg. Otherwise, I'll just do it with my much faster PC.
