I have just got my PS3 working with Gentoo. It took me a little time to find a good HOWTO, but this one works very well:

http://overlays.gentoo.org/proj/cell/wiki/InstallGentooOnPS3

I have some comments from the experience that may help others:

1. Do what they say about using only 2 partitions: a bootable root and a swap. I tried 3 - boot swap and root and it hung on boot. I think it is because the kboot bootloader looks for its .conf file in /etc on root - you have to label the root partition "/" for this purpose. However, at the time of boot it has yet to mount that partition so it cannot find its config file and hangs. Anyway, use 2 partitions and you will be fine.

2. There was limited help on wireless setup and I spent most of my time sorting this out. Here is how I did it:

I kept it simple by just adding a default route as suggested in the HOWTO:

route add default gw 192.168.1.1

Then I put everything else in /etc/conf.d/net

These are my lines from net

modules=( "iwconfig" "!wpa_supplicant" "ifconfig" )
essid_eth0="Wireless"
key_Wireless="s:1a2b3c4d5e6f7 enc open"
channel_eth0="11"
config_eth0=( "dhcp" )
dhcp_eth0=( "release" )

I had to change my router over to OPEN from SHARED encryption, but that was probably a good thing anyway. Yours may sue a different channel if you are not in the UK. The s in the key line tells it to expect an ASCII string rather than HEX

This setup worked fine.

3. The final missing bit was an instruction on how to get the machine back to working as a PS3. There are 2 methods. You can hold down the pwer button on the front for 5 seconds while switching off the power at the back. However, this will return the machine to factory settings and you will need to start again with changing default OS etc.

The second method is to type "ps3-boot-game-os" and ENTER at the kboot: prompt. Be quick though because it will default to Gentoo after a while.

Now all we have to do is wait for the BBC to come up with a version of iPlayer that uses Gnash rather than Flash!!

Tim.

Thanks for the tipps.

Btw: you can also enter ps3-boot-game-os as root on the console if you've already booted your gentoo.
