K3b compiled OK, but I can't get it to recognize my burner. :? Can someone confirm k3b is now functional with kde svn, and my problem must be something local?

I've tried as user, and kdesu k3b. It launches fine, but can't seem to find a burner. It says I can add one, but I can find no way to do so- that option seems missing or non-functional? All my permissions are correct, and this burner works fine (for years) with k3b on all my other distros (including Gentoo) with kde-3.5.9.

I think I have all deps, and USE flags, but I guess I could be missing something. If anyone has this working, please list what deps you installed, and USE flags you enabled (if any), and if you had to manually add your burner.

Works fine here, but it crashes before starting to burn.

This is actually pretty easy to fix, in the newer versions of ffmpeg, it will fail to build due to the fact that the includes in /usr/include were moved from being in one directory /usr/include/ffmpeg to being in various directories like /usr/include/libavcodec and /usr/include/libavformat, to fix it I just created symbolic links to the include files into a newly created /usr/include/ffmpeg directory. I am using the latest ffmpeg subversion and it seemed to work. It's a workaround but it will ensure compatibility with older packages that use the /usr/include/ffmpeg, or in the code, ffmpeg/avcodec.h for example.

Am I correct in thinking k3b does not yet implement needed functions to work under kde4/kde svn? I can compile/install it, but things are greyed out/missing.

Again, I still can't get it to see my burner, or add one. I've used k3b for years on many distros, and countless versions of kde, so I am pretty experienced in setting it up.
Again, if I'm wrong, and anyone has it actually working (actually successfully burning, not just compiled and installed  ), please post how you did it (required deps, USE flags, etc.).

Interesting statement. :) Sort of like saying my word processor works fine, but I can't type any words. However, I assume you got k3b to recognize a burner OK, so it must be something I'm missing. :? As I said, I think I've eliminated the usual suspects- anyone have any suggestions?

else we could use pkgconfig to detect the new ffmpeg includes as it has been used in the transcode case.

Ok, I see, that was a bit misleading:
1. My burner gets reconized (correctly)
2. I started a data project, which I tried to burn on a CD-RW
3. K3B crashed there

Did you check the permissions?
Are you in the cdrom group?

Berniyh,
AFAIK, my permissions are correct, but maybe I'm wrong- what are they supposed to be, and on what items? However, I get the same result with kdesu k3b launching as root, as I mentioned.

I am in the cdrom and cdrw groups. My fstab line is: /
Code:
dev/cdrom      /mnt/cdrom   auto      noauto,users   0 0
In k3b, do you have any device options- I don't have anything under the toolbar item Device?
System Congifuration Probe gives:
Quote:
No CD/DVD writer found.
K3b did not find an optical writing device in your system. Thus, you will not be able to burn CDs or DVDs. However, you can still use other K3b features like audio track extraction or audio transcoding or ISO9660 image creation.

In settings ->Devices, it says
Quote:
You can add devices that have not been detected and change the black values by clicking in the list.
There are only two items- Read only drives- none, and Writer drives- none. If I click there, nothing happens. BTW- what are "black values"?

Is k3b Version 1.95-svn significantly different, or just incomplete and not functional?

It shouldn't be in the fstab at all. Mounting (for removable devices) these days in handled by hal.
Anyway, I meant the perms of the device nodes.

In /dev, there are cdrom and cdrw links to hdc. I did "chown rob /dev/hdc" and k3b now launches as user rob, but burner is still not detected. Output also seems to have problems:
Code:
rob@gentoo-audio ~ $ k3b
k3b(3280) KLocalePrivate::initEncoding: Cannot resolve system encoding, defaulting to ISO 8859-1.
k3b(3280): ""Backgroundcolor" - conversion from "Window" to QColor failed" " (wrong format: expected '3' or '4'items, read '1')"

k3b(3280): ""Backgroundcolor" - conversion from "Window" to QColor failed" " (wrong format: expected '3' or '4'items, read '1')"

k3b(3280): ""Foregroundcolor" - conversion from "WindowText" to QColor failed" " (wrong format: expected '3' or'4' items, read '1')"

rob@gentoo-audio ~ $ QStringList Solid::Backends::Hal::HalManager::findDeviceByDeviceInterface(const Solid::DeviceInterface::Type&)  error:  "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Disconnected"

Object::connect: No such signal K3bFileTreeView::deviceExecuted(K3bDevice::Device*)
Object::connect: No such signal K3bFileTreeView::contextMenu(K3bDevice::Device*,QPoint)

Previously. when I tried and launch k3b from konsole using kdesu (command not found as user), I got this:
Code:
rob@gentoo-audio ~ $ kdesu k3b
kdesu(3074) KLocalePrivate::initEncoding: Cannot resolve system encoding, defaulting to ISO 8859-1.
rob@gentoo-audio ~ $
A Dialog box also popped up:
Error-K3b
Could not start process Cannot talk to klauncher: The name org.kde.klauncher was not provided by any .service files.

K3b then launches, but I still had the problems described above.

BTW- I just noticed that in k3b->settings->programs transcode is NOT FOUND. Could that be my problem?

No. transcode is only needed, if you want to encode movies to create DVD-Video disks etc.

Thanks for the info Berniyh,
I'm currently doing a world update, and there is a hal update in there [U 0.5.11 -> 0.5.11-r1]- maybe that will fix it after I do a complete kde-scm update/rebuild. :)

Does anybody know how to set a default encoding in konqueror for kde svn? I tried setting the Default Encoding in the font page of the settings dialog to UTF8, but every time I go to a new web page, the View/Set Encoding menu shows that the encoding is set to 'Default', and the page contains a number of strange characters. Setting it to UTF8 using the menu makes those strange characters disappear, replaced by the correct ones.

Update on k3b problems: A sync and complete rebuild of world (along with the hal update), kde-scm, and then k3b didn't change anything with k3b- still have same problems as described above.

BTW- panel custom settings again don't survive a reboot, and konqeror browser launches itself and then spawns multiple instances of itself by itself when I reboot into kde.

Entire system also seems kind of sluggish opening apps and windows. Plasma just crashed when I tried to shutdown with signal 11 (SIGSEGV), but it didn't shutdown, and two instances of the x-chat icon appeared on the panel, but do nothing, and I can't close them. Opera does launch, and works. However. I can't move the Opera window, or close the plasma crash dialog box. There are no icons (close, etc.) on the right top of the Opera window, and i can only exit Opera from file menu-> exit.

Guess some problems have cropped up at svn today. :( Anyone else experiencing this? :?

UPDATE: Gradually, everything went haywire and now no apps are usable. Every app and window opened is not movable, only partially functional, and difficult to close out, even from konsole- have to resort to the System Monitor (which strangely has maintained it's fuctionality) and right-click-> kill process on the listing line for each process. I tried to copy the details in the plasma crash dialog so I could report it,, but couldn't manage it, as no text editor or browser would work while booted to kde. Anyway, it has something to do with desktop containments.

UPDATE2: OK- I stupidly forgot to immediately try deleting .kdesvn, and restarting kde. That seems to solve most of the weird stuff I mentioned before. Still sort of sluggish, but functional again. :D Panel is mysteriously back to my custom size, although the config files in .kdesvn have been regenerated- how could that happen?

I'm trying to build kde-meta-9999 from the kdesvn-portage overlay, but I'm having trouble with the akonadi ebuild.

it fails with

Code:

CMake Error: This project requires some variables to be set,
and cmake can not find them.
Please set the following variables:
QT_QTSQL_LIBRARY (ADVANCED)

I've tried rebuilding automoc as suggested earlier in the thread, as well as cmake (just for kicks) but nothing seems to help. any ideas?

Tbh, I didn't expect that.

Do you have an entry in fstab about your cdrom?
If so, maybe it works after killing that + restart.

Hi all,

I have been installing kde4 for the first time and I've got stuck at this error when compiling krunner
Code:
Scanning dependencies of target kdeinit_krunner
[ 23%] Building CXX object krunner/CMakeFiles/kdeinit_krunner.dir/kdeinit_krunner_automoc.o
[ 25%] Building CXX object krunner/CMakeFiles/kdeinit_krunner.dir/krunnerdialog.o
[ 27%] Building CXX object krunner/CMakeFiles/kdeinit_krunner.dir/collapsiblewidget.o
[ 29%] Building CXX object krunner/CMakeFiles/kdeinit_krunner.dir/configdialog.o
[ 31%] Building CXX object krunner/CMakeFiles/kdeinit_krunner.dir/interface.o

make[2]: *** [krunner/CMakeFiles/kdeinit_krunner.dir/interface.o] Error 1
make[1]: *** [krunner/CMakeFiles/kdeinit_krunner.dir/all] Error 2
make: *** [all] Error 2

!!! ERROR in kde-base/krunner-scm:
!!! In cmake-utils_src_make at line 1130
!!! Make failed!

I have been waiting for two days if it is not just a temporary issue, well it is not. Does anyone please have any idea please? Running kde without krunner is quite uncomfortable. Thank you.

Hm, that looks like a dependency problem. Try:
Code:
paludis -i1 libplasma krunner

But I would recommend a full recompile.

I'll try that- you mean just comment out the fstab cdrom line? However, I still have other unrelated problems.

I still get the weird plasma crash on shutdown, where it seems to go through some gyrations where the two icon items (I can't tell if they are x-chat or xterm) appear and are non-funtional, and can't be closed, and it eventually sbuts down. On reboot, my custom panel settings/icons are again lost.

Do you think a qt-split rebuild and then another complete kde-scm rebuild will help? Is anyone else having this shutdown weirdness with the plasma crash deal?

EDIT: Hmmm.. Just tried a quick shutdown to test, and the plasma crash/2 X icons thing didn't happen. I've done nothing since yesterday, when it did happen.

I also have (since yesterday) on restart a large (4"x5"} plasmoid with three icons- home, trash, and System. Clicking on the home icon causes a plasma workspace crash about klauncher (Could not start process Unable to create io-slave:
klauncher said: Unknown protocol 'smb'.), System does nothing, and trash opens the trash window normally. If I close it out, it reappears on reboot. I'd like to permanently get rid of it, as I never use it.

Well, it is not something new, that Plasma goes up in flames for a few days.
I would suggest to rebuild kde-scm in a few days and see if it works then.

No, I don't think, that a qt rebuild would help. A kde-scm rebuild might help, but you can't really know that.
