How can I get KDE4 to display an icon for a mounted network share (or for that matter, a mounted USB drive) on the Desktop? If that's not possible, what's KDE4's new mechanism for displaying mounted items?

You can try the "new device notifier" plasmoid (from the plasma-workspace ebuild). Right click on the desktop, choose "add widgets", scroll the dialog for the "new device notifier" and drag it on the desktop.

It doesn't work very well. For example, my mounted partitions were mislabeled, one that didn't exist at all showed up, and my samba share didn't show.

I can't comment on that, since I've never used it. The only alternatives which come to my mind are to either creating an icon on the desktop pointing to the mount point of the device or to use a folder view pointing there. In this case, however, the directory is treated just as any directory (there's no information about to mounted/umounted state, for example). You can create them by dragging them from the file manager or even from the "Computer" tab of the K menu.

Bah, that doesn't make me happy, but thanks.

I guess I'll have to wait for someone to write a plasmoid that works or improve the current one.

remove kde4 use flag and use emerald ad window decorator instead of kde4windowdecorator and it will return to build and work. i think that something has been changed in plasma and so you cannot build the compiz window decorator.

i know that it compiles with USE="-kde4" but i want to use window-decorator-kde4

should i wait until compiz team fix this issue??

there has been a change in the paintPanel abi which broke the compatibility with the old compiz code.
as i could see the changes removed the exposed rectangle in favour of overlapping rects (which can be handles better) and there has been provided a new constructor for use when not needing to use rectangle over rectangle area.
for what i've seen by reading the relative code, it seems that compiz doesn't use rectangle over rectangle but just defines a general rectangle to paint into with a general defined position (top-left of the corner), which from the new plasma code seems to be implicit in plasma functions. for this reason i've tried to patch the compiz code to see whathappens with this new modifications. it should work fine like this but i'm not sure if this is what compiz devels really wanted to do. the only stuff to do now is to test it out a little and see what happens.

for the moment the patch it's working. the patch is here:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-5191550.html#5191550

you just copy the code portion of my post that i've indicated and take the compiz-999.ebuild and modify it to add a patching line inside.
for example let's say that you name the patch
Code:
compiz-unofficial-fix.patch

and you put it in the files directory in the overlay (when i need to modify the overlay i do it in a private overlay by copying the new ebuild with full directory, in this case the directory:
Code:
cp <your repository path>/x11-wm/compiz/ <your personal repository path>/x11-wm/ -av
) and then you'll add inside the ebuild the following line:

Code:
epatch "${FILESDIR}"/compiz-unofficial-fix.patch

in the src_unpack() section right after the other epatch commands and before eautoreconf.
then build compiz from the personal overlay and it will build. if you experience troubles with the window decorators then it may be fault to the patch.

Thanks! That did the trick... odd how phonon didn't require that version of xine-lib...?

Been away from my kde4 machine for a week... kde-svn is really looking great, and even better, working very well. Great works devs.

i've seen a weird problem with k3b. if you use the ebuild ffmpeg version it will not find ffmpeg minimal version during configure phase, but if you'll use the new one it will not build the k3b_bin. is there someone who can confirm this?! if this can be confirmed then i think that it should be brought to the view of the k3b devs.

the last thing that i've noticed after yesterday rebuild is that the panels don't fix anymore the visible area of the screen and that the task manager applet doesn't work anymore.
practically when i maximize a window it will overlap the panels and go behind them. this is not a very good thing... the other stuff i've noticed is that the taskbar applet doesn't show the running apps anymore and this is more annoying that the other problem. can anyone confirm that this is not just a problem of mine?! thanks.

if you look in the configure phase of phonon you can see that it requires the minimum version of xine-lib 1.15.

no problem. for me it's running quite well, compiz's exposè is the only way to see the running programs on the various desktops after the taskbar break and for now it runs well. i've had 2 segfaults in 24hours of running time with the decorator so it might be that the function wasn't properly the one it should, i'll try to look into the compiz docs this days and see if can find more on this matter.

I had this problem, too. Syncing the overlay should fix it

Very similar problem with a different overlay: I think you've got a patch for that header, haven't you?
The header is there but doesn't work as it should.

Some issues:

a) Konqueror depends on webkit-kpart. Or at least it makes use of webkit stuff if webkit-kpart is installed.
So webkit-kpart should be compiled before it.

b) Konqueror fails here with:
Code:
Linking CXX shared module ../../../../lib/konqsidebar_tree.so
CMakeFiles/konqsidebar_tree.dir/konqsidebar_tree.o: In function `KonqSidebar_Tree::qt_metacall(QMetaObject::Call, int, void**)':
konqsidebar_tree.cpp:(.text+0x5dc): undefined reference to `KParts::WindowArgs::WindowArgs()'
konqsidebar_tree.cpp:(.text+0x5e4): undefined reference to `KParts::BrowserArguments::BrowserArguments()'
konqsidebar_tree.cpp:(.text+0x5ec): undefined reference to `KParts::OpenUrlArguments::OpenUrlArguments()'
...etc etc

Googling for "undefined reference to KParts::WindowArgs::WindowArgs()" only shows webkit related results.

c) Above makes sense, because webkit-kpart fails with:
Code:
[ 64%] Building CXX object webkitkde/kdewebkit/CMakeFiles/kdewebkit.dir/kdewebkit_automoc.o
Linking CXX shared library ../../lib/libkdewebkit.so
/usr/lib64/qt4/libQtUiTools.a(abstractformbuilder.o): In function `QFormInternal::QAbstractFormBuilder::save(QIODevice*, QWidget*)':
abstractformbuilder.cpp:(.text+0x9c01): undefined reference to `QDomDocument::QDomDocument()'
abstractformbuilder.cpp:(.text+0x9c41): undefined reference to `QDomNode::appendChild(QDomNode const&)'
abstractformbuilder.cpp:(.text+0x9c49): undefined reference to `QDomNode::~QDomNode()'
abstractformbuilder.cpp:(.text+0x9c51): undefined reference to `QDomNode::~QDomNode()'
abstractformbuilder.cpp:(.text+0x9c79): undefined reference to `QDomDocument::toString(int) const'
abstractformbuilder.cpp:(.text+0x9d3d): undefined reference to `QDomDocument::~QDomDocument()'
abstractformbuilder.cpp:(.text+0x9df2): undefined reference to `QDomDocument::~QDomDocument()'
abstractformbuilder.cpp:(.text+0x9e21): undefined reference to `QDomNode::~QDomNode()'

And it has been failing with this for some days already, pretty much short after someone had some big brainfart and committed libxml2-2.6.36-r1 without actually testing it.

So, it seems my qt-4.4 install is broken, qt-webkit at least
I suspected this uber messy libxml2 update.
Code:
└» paludis --owner /usr/include/qt4/QtXml/QDomDocument
* /usr/include/qt4/QtXml/QDomDocument
    x11-libs/qt-core-4.4.1-r1::installed
        /usr/include/qt4/QtXml/QDomDocument

Bingo. After someone masked it, and after downgrading to libxml2-2.6.36 again, recompiling qt-core and qt-webkit and all the rest of qt-split still does not solve the problem.

Any ideas?

And now that webkit-kpart compiled, konqueror still fails due to --as-needed, and amarok, and playground-plasma and pretty much anything that has to do with webkit.

Heck, what happened...

This compilation error has nothing to do with webkit. All the functions and classes listed there are part of the KParts library, which is a part of kdelibs (see http://api.kde.org/4.x-api/kdelibs-apidocs/kparts/html/annotated.html). I think the problem comes from the fact that the build process tries to compile the various libraries for the sidebar without linking to the libkparts library, but I can't understand where this problem was introduced, as (according to http://websvn.kde.org/ the CMakeList.txt haven't been changed for a long time.

At any rate, today I succeeded to compile konqueror by changing the following files:

  • /var/paludis/distfiles/svn-src/KDE/kdebase/kdebase/apps/konqueror/sidebar/trees/bookmark_module/CMakeLists.txt
  • /var/paludis/distfiles/svn-src/KDE/kdebase/kdebase/apps/konqueror/sidebar/trees/dirtree_module/CMakeLists.txt
  • /var/paludis/distfiles/svn-src/KDE/kdebase/kdebase/apps/konqueror/sidebar/trees/history_module/CMakeLists.txt

In each of the previous file, there's a line starting with target_link_library, like this:
Code:

target_link_libraries(konq_sidebartree_dirtree ${KDE4_KDE3SUPPORT_LIBS} konq konqsidebarplugin  )

This line should be changed so that inside the parentheses, there's also ${KDE4_KPARTS_LIBS}, like this:
Code:

target_link_libraries(konq_sidebartree_dirtree ${KDE4_KPARTS_LIBS} ${KDE4_KDE3SUPPORT_LIBS} konq konqsidebarplugin  )

Beware that if you do this change, you may have problems next time you'll install something from kdebase, since svn will notice that you've edited the file locally and speak of a conflict. In this case, you can simply remove the files you edited and everything will work again.[/b][/code][/list]

@ Stefano Crocco

Thanks for clarification!
Your "patches" should definately go upstream.

For now I did a local git branch and modified the kdebuilds to do some sed'ing fun.

Thanks again. :)

for the ones who want to make full use of ffmpeg in the k3b you'd want to add the patch posted here to your ebuild

https://www2.mailstation.de/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=k3b

just download the file in your <overlay directory>/app-cdr/k3b/files folder and then add this line in your k3b ebuild before the src_compile function:

Quote:
PATCHES="${FILESDIR}/fix-ffmpeg-includes.patch"

and transform the ffmpeg? line like this:

Quote:
ffmpeg? ( media-video/ffmpeg )

this should have it work correctly. i've posted the patch upstream hoping that sebastian would take care of it there.
