Hi,

First post to this list and I should say I'm very new to Gentoo so please excuse my ignorance. Everything was going well and I'm enjoying Gentoo until I tried to emerge openoffice and received the following error:

* ERROR: app-office/openoffice-2.4.0 failed.
* Call stack:
* ebuild.sh, line 49: Called src_compile
* environment, line 5375: Called die
* The specific snippet of code:
* make || die "Build failed"
* The die message:
* Build failed
*
* If you need support, post the topmost build error, and the call stack if relevant.
* A complete build log is located at '/var/tmp/portage/app-office/openoffice-2.4.0/temp/build.log'.
* The ebuild environment file is located at '/var/tmp/portage/app-office/openoffice-2.4.0/temp/environment'.

I'm not sure what info to post to help understand what is causing the error, so just let me know.

Thanks

We'll need a little bit more than that - if you can give about ten lines before the first line that says "error" in it, and beyond, that would be great.

I think you may have the same issue that I have (I'll post it when I get a chance...)

When you first emerge OpenOffice, it installs all its dependencies first. For some reason, ImageMagick gets something goofed up after it's installed. This happened to me too and I re-emerged imagemagick and then emerged openoffice and everything worked.

Hope this helps.

Here are the lines above the error message for openoffice.

* Messages for package app-office/openoffice-2.4.0:

*
* It is important to note that OpenOffice.org is a very fragile
* build when it comes to CFLAGS. A number of flags have already
* been filtered out. If you experience difficulty merging this
* package and use agressive CFLAGS, lower the CFLAGS and try to
* merge again. Also note that building OOo takes a lot of time and
* hardware ressources: 4-6 GB free diskspace and 256 MB RAM are
* the minimum requirements. If you have less, use openoffice-bin
* instead.
*
* Don't have at least 512MBytes RAM
* Bad things may happen! You may abort the build by pressing ctrl+c in
* the next 15 seconds.
*
*
* To get a localized build, set the according LINGUAS variable(s).

Just for an update. Re-emerging ImageMagick seems to have worked. Openoffice has been building for about 12hrs and it quit long before that before. I'll post as solved if all goes well. Could be another day or so on my old 600Mhz iBook.

Since this is the ppc forum and I assume there a several people using older ppc machines, I'll ask another question (though sorry it is off topic). Is there, or have people seen, a significant speed increase going from 384 to 640 MB (to offset the $90 price)?

Thanks.

the less you use your swap area the faster you run your gentoo
increasing ram is suggested ... 256Mb is good, 512Mb is very very good
with 1Gb you can run virtual machine, or virtualizer like MOL assign 256Mb/512Mb to the macOSX virtual machine, in this case ...

$90 is a quite a good price (a bit expensive) for the addition ram you are talking about
