Hi All,

I have installed Gentoo on a 400Mhz Indigo iMac. This system has a G3 PPC processor and an ATI Rage 128 graphics chip.

I have xorg working and am using fluxbox window manager. Gentoo runs nicely on this hardware with fluxbox and I am very happy with it. The only problem is I can not get 3D acceleration working.

I have made numerous small changes to the xorg.conf and made sure appropriate kernel options were specified, and modules loaded to no avail. When I run glxgears the frame rate is around 80FPS. :(

I have included all info I can think of that might be useful for anyone trying to figure this out. Please let me know if you need more.

I checked bugzilla and this bug related to the r128 driver on the x86 side appears to related as I see these same errors in my xorg log file. https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=216222

I am hoping this is not a bug in the driver and it's just a matter of configuring something differently. Hopefully some more experienced person will see the problem in my config. Thank you! -- Yertman

Hi,

This is a great idea. I tried setting the screen to a lower resolution using xrandr, but now that I think about it that's not the same thing as initializing X with different resolution or depth.

I have tried changing the default depth in my xorg.conf to 16, but then X is a mess. I have to switch the config back to 24 and kill then kill X from a differnt VT.

I also tried a different xorg.conf that had a screen section defined with different display subsections for different depths. With this I tried leaving the defaultdepth at 24 then made 640x480 the first mode in the display section for the default depth. Despite this X starts up at 1024x768-24!!!! The only thing I could find in the log file was something like no mode for this name? Using default 1024x768...

Anyhow. I feel pretty dumb asking this but how exactly would you change my xorg.conf to try different resolutions or color depths?

I don't think switching modes on the fly works very well, unless you have a newer version of xorg-server.

Try this in your xorg.conf to see if things work ok. You might need to comment out the HorizSync, VertRefresh, and the ModeLine parts of your Monitor section, too.

What is aty128fb?

`video=aty128fb:option1,option2:value2,option3' (multiple options should
be separated by comma, values are separated from options by `:').
Accepted options:

noaccel - do not use acceleration engine. It is default.

At the resolution and depth you gave it, it needs more than the 8 Mb of video memory you've got to do 3D. Your only choices are to use 16 bit or lower and have 3D support, or use 24 bit without it.

Sorry, but it's a hardware limitation!

Hello,

I tried you suggestion, but I can't get it to work. It seems no matter what I do the x server goes to 1024x768 at a depth of 24. I will have to post the output from the x server when I get a chance. It seems there is an error and it goes to the default setting, which is the setting mentioned above.

Interestingly, commenting out the HorizSync, VertRefresh, causes the x server to not come up at all - just get a black screen. When I have managed to get it to recognize a depth of 16 the display is corrupt, and I end up having to log in with ssh and kill the x server process, to get control of the system again.

Thanks for all your help thus far. I am learning a lot.

Hi,

I finally got a few minutes to try some of the things suggested here and post back with logs.

Here is my current xorg.conf with the default depth set to 16.

When I try this the xserver presents a corrupt display then crashes and send me to a text login after about 30 seconds.
