When will VirtualBox 1.6 be in portage? I mean not marked as stable but masked?

I am looking for that too, and also the close source version, which has usb support.

I'm looking forward to this also, but Gentoo always seems a version or two behind. Notice, for example, that 1.5.6 has not yet been unmasked. So I suspect we are in for a little wait. Obviously, if I wanted to accelerate the process, I could volunteer to help.

Why don't you try it out yourself then post here (or in an upstream bug report) on your issue?

I see there are reported problems with virtual networking and accessing files. Do you use this feature, and if so did you have any problems?

Its got a bazillion regressions for all it new features over 1.5.6.

I don't think we'll see it in tree before 1.6.2 - if I was the dev in charge I certainly would not be adding it anytime soon.

Ok, now Virtualbox 1.6.2 is out. I don't suppose it will ever be placed in portage, will it?

1.6.2 works pretty well here. 1.6.0 wasn't able to boot my maschines created with 1.5, but with 1.6.2 all seems fine.

Get the two 1.6.0 ebuilds from the overlay mentioned in the bug above and put them in your overlay, just rename them as 1.6.2. Then download VirtualBox from sun and put it in your DISTDIR. Et voila.

Or simply get them here.

what is DISTDIR. Et voila. ?

on a side note, why is gentoo so bad about putting this into portage? what does it take to make them realize it's not in there and needs to be?

DISTDIR == /usr/portage/distfiles (usually)

you're wrong
it the other way around,
1) the devs are chronically under-represented
2) they're looking at quality over quantity and 1.6.0 was really buggy, 1.6.2 seems to be better if it proves right it should be in-tree in no time, otherwise you'll have to wait days or months
if you need it file a bug-report: https://bugs.gentoo.org/ or use ebuilds from overlays

i did file a bug report. there is a pretty lengthy thread on it on gentoo bugs. it didn't do any good ether(i don't mean that in mean way or complaining...just trying to state the end result).

i don't understand. the whole purpose of a masked file is if it is buggy. so why don't they put it as masked and let the user decide if they want to deal with a buggy program? shouldn't the user have the say so since it is his/her system?

yeah, that is what I thought, too

unfortunately some devs think that they're in a stronger position or whatever and wait a notable time before it gets into the tree ...

seemingly they have a need for long flame-like discussions (*ducks and runs away* ) ... whereas it would be easier for everyone to simply put it into the tree & leave it there

but something's still wrong / broken in user-dev relationship, I dunno if that (finally) will make a change, but you could open up a thread in "Gentoo Chat" subforum (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewforum-f-7.html) and have a nice conversation with Donnie Berkholtz - hopefully this will improve things even more

One problem with blindly adding to the tree and masking is that it doesn't stop the group of people who will unmask, ignore the error message (saying why it was masked), then file a bug report that wastes the dev and/or bug wrangler's time. At least that's how I think it could happen.

Also, overlays make it easier to work on entire subtrees, because having a masked package with a lot of masked dependencies, all in a state of flux, is no fun. Also, you can't mask eclasses. The latter introduce a whole set of different problems, even when using overlays.

I spoke with Donnie Berkholtz and he said that he doesn't not maintain virtual box. he said looked at the the metadata.xml and these are the guys who maintain it:

metadata.xml says:
herd: no-herd
dev: jokey
dev: swapon

He recommended I get in touch with one of these guys. I did a search for them on the member list and the only one I came up with is jokey. How do I get a hold of the other two?

The developer names in the metadata file are the first part of their gentoo email addresses. So either of them can be contacted by emailing that name @gentoo.org. no-herd means the package doesn't belong to a herd (a herd is a group of similar packages).

The forums aren't a terribly reliable way to contact developers. Not all of them have forums accounts, as you noticed, and many (most?) don't check the forums frequently.

I tried swapon and i got an email back saying that email address is undeliverable. How else would I try getting a hold of swapon?
