Hello,

I have installed Mathematica 6.0 under Gentoo Linux and I have 2 several problems, especially one important. First is, that Mathematica could not display special characters such as a / or the @ symbol and so on. The second less important is the fact, that I could not find the gui behavior option to change the integrated menubar (File, Edit, Insert ...) from every notebook to global.

Any ideas?

Bump.

I am also having the issues with the symbols /, @, and #. This is not only annoying, but it has (at least on one occasion) led to errors in my code. Does anyone have any ideas? It works when typed in any of the other format settings (Title, section, subsection, text, DisplayForumla, etc.) except for "code," "input," and "output." It seems there should at least be a workaround by setting the input format to display as text or displayformula, but I have yet to find it. I will keep trying, but would greatly appreciate any help (even if it is in the form of "I tried already, there's no way.")

If you run Mathematica from a terminal, does it dump any errors? If so, these can be used to diagnose the problem. My guess is a font issue.

I'm running into the same problem. Has anyone found a solution? The weird thing is that special characters such as sigma are displayed properly, but a simple "/" doesn't work.

So I ran Mathematica with the "noTrueTypeFonts" option and everything works fine.

Any ideas why TrueType isn't working?

Had the same trouble. Solved it by
Code:
emerge -C mathematica-fonts

:) -C ! :)
&Aslo added
Code:
 LC_ALL=en_US
export LC_ALL

to the end of /usr/local/bin/Mathematica and /usr/local/bin/mathematica just before
Code:
 exec "${MathematicaFE}" -topDirectory "${TopDirectory}" "$@"

Thanks dinvlad, that advice made my week! :D :D :D I've been trying to cure that problem since the last upgrade. If anyone has a moment, I would be further grateful for a short explanation of why this works...

Apparently, mathematica-fonts are for other applications and confront with "real" Mathematica, that uses its own fonts :)
And about LC_ALL - mathematica uses "native" en_US symbol table and may conflict with alternative locales, if you used one.

Thanks a lot for this post all. It really helped me out running Mathematica 6.0.1. I think I have an additional issue. Firstly, I did have that issue of not being able to display /'s or some other symbols. I unmerged those mathematica fonts and I could see the symbols. That was a big help especially because truetype looks so good. I have a second issue though that I've (inelegantly) solved that I wonder what you all think about. When I first installed mathematica, I couldn't see any displayed fonts because they were all white for some reason (the same color as the notebook background). I dug around and found some Ubuntu users with the same issue:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/197163
Now they found a solution that involved deleting libQtCore.so.4, libQtGui.so.4, and libQt3Support.so.4 files due to some conflicts in mathematica's version of the qt libraries compared with installed versions. Needless to say it didn't "work" for me. I did find a solution by running mathematica with the:
Code:
mathematica -defualtvisuals

command. I just wondered why their solution didn't work when I tried it. I have Qt4libs installed and I also have those 3 files located in /usr/lib/qt. Oh well, it's not too big of a deal to run Mathematica with that option as long as it works. Thanks again for the post and I hope anyone who has my issue can use my method for a quick hack.
