Hello everybody, you maybe know that you can't use your aol internet connection without their specific f***ing sofware. But that's only a resctriction, not an impossibility of installing and using your gentoo.

There's two way for installing your gentoo with aol, the fist is to download all the needed distifles :? , this is not the best. The second way is to use an other linux which provide you an internet connection. To use your aol with linux just download peng (www.peng.apinc.org), don't forget the sdl library.
After that and after you have set your aol internet connection, just try if it is working.
The next step is :
Code:
redhat@root# mkdir /mnt/gentoo
redhat@root# mount /dev/hdaX /mnt/gentoo

where X is the number of your partition

After that just follow the gentoo installation guide, it will be very easy and you will be able to begin from stage1.

If you have any question i'll be glad to answer and please excuse my english...
Hope this will help.

As far as I can tell, he's not doing that, but infecting AOL users with Linux. Maybe that's a little better? It's a good tip...

Agreed. I know that there are many teenagers who don't make the financial decisions at their house (speaking from experience- WinME + AOL). Excellent tip. Now then, where's the netzero/juno for linux?

Thanks :D I wrote the installation guide, hehe. I was going to write it in French too, but lack of time and other distractions got me.

Pascal.

This thread has been dead for a while, so I'll be surprised if anyone wants any more discussion of this coorporate monster...

I was using Red Hat (8.3, then went to 9.0) and decided to try Gentoo to prove my manhood and because of a few issues I was having with Red Hat. Oh, and Red Hat went commericial :( .

Penggy AOL (aka BIP) was among those reasons. Every time I tried the installation it would tell me to dig up something else, and Penggy's forums are filled with people talking about it not working in Red Hat. Maybe it's just because Red Hat is so common...

I wondered if you pro's had any recommendations, opinions, or precautions about this.

The other thing I'd like to try is using WINE. As I never connected Red Hat to the internet I never used WINE in there, so my only WINE experience is from Knoppix 3.2. I didn't really expect a live distro to run WINE very well. Is there anyone out there who's gotten WINE to run AOL 9.0 (or earlier version-there's several on an AOL CD and I have several of those)?

Now I'm really pushing an impossible probability: if there's anyone who's run AOL through WINE, has anyone successfully run AOL High Speed?!
