Xen is good stuff, and Gentoo has one of the better and more up to date implementations. I wouldn't hesitate to put it into production and don't know why the packages are masked.

I think xen is best for server virtualization where guest performance is paramount. You will always be a few kernel revisions behind, and the xen hypervisor lacks the robustness of the Linux kernel in terms of scheduling, NUMA support, ACPI, etc. However it is paravirt through and through with Linux guests and has the best performance in that aspect.

KVM is sweet for development work and testing. You get the benefit of the latest kernel and your host OS will be full speed. However in my experience the guest performance is pretty slow when it comes to I/O and networking. VMWare is also a good stand in here if you don't have the hardware for KVM.

With that in mind, unmask xen and give it a go, and compare it to the others. All of these products have nice aspects!

I've used app-emulation/xen-3.2.1 + sys-kernel/xen-sources-2.6.21 from portage. It works fine. But on my laptop (yes.. :) on laptop) - sony vaio sz 460, VirtualBox much faster.
