More info @ nvnews.net:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=173d250ac9527e153b293cbc69f65528&t=113919

edit:
Copied the 173.08 ebuild from portage and compiled it without problems. That's on x86 + 8800GTS_320 + 2.6.25-zen2 + gcc-4.2.4...

2D slowness seems to be gone!

Probably because the portage-mirror you synced with wasn't up to date yet. Just sync again.

Well, did you unmask the testing builds?

If you don't know what I'm on about, take a look here to learn more about Gentoo's package management:

3D performance under wine is quite a bit better with this driver.COD4 for instance, runs at around 30-50fps on average with my 8800gt.With previous drivers, it was closer to 20-35fps.S.T.A.L.K.E.R seems to be faster too, although I haven't managed to figure out how to display fps with it yet.
Oblivion is still ridiculously slow, though, although I believe this is a wine issue as cedega runs it at 60fps with medium settings (but cedega has major graphical glitches with newer nvidia drivers, so it's pretty useless in practice)

Seems that with this driver, if nvidia-settings -a InitialPixmapPlacement=2 is run too soon after X starts, it crashes. Adding a 3 second sleep has worked around it. Anyone else experiencing this?

Is anyone getting a slowdown on changing gamma settings _after_ resuming from hibernate? Some of the symptoms are
1. X takes 100% cpu
2. You can see the red, green and blue channels being set one by one, each taking a few seconds
3. Loading nvidia-settings takes a lot of time (apparently because the gamma is being set).
4. After the gamma is set, the system goes back to normal (responsive). However, restarting xserver takes longer time than usual.

On the positive side, hibernate is now working on my T61 (NVS 140M) :)

This version is worse than 169.12-r11 here, (8400Mg + 2.6.25-gentoo-r4) 3d performance is good but when i wanna scroll the mouse up/down in console (especially colorful emerge output) sssllllooowww :?
Back to 169.12-r11 :)

2D is much faster compared to 173.08 on my 8800, but still slower than 171.06, unfortunately.

amd64 package sha256: 3ee8aabc824fac1d5c917979aca288ad600da0d0bd34001f9c5f0c0254b1af36
