How much does Cups depend upon Samba? If any? I almost always see them both installed, but was wondering if Samba had to be installed or running to have cups work, we also forward jobs to some use windows print queues. I thought samba was only needed if a windows user wanted to print TO the printer on the linux box, not if a linux user wanted to print to a windows server as that was controlled by cups.

Unless something changed recently you need Samba to also print to an smb print share.
Of course CUPS can be used w/o Samba if you print to/from using other protocols, such as it's native IPP and lpr/lpd. Most modern Windows systems support IPP (and lpd is available as well with the TCP/IP Printing for Unix).
