I have a G3 powerbook (a "pismo") with a dead DVD/CD drive, so, I can't mount install disks onto it.
I have tried loading Linux install discs in other macs of mine, setting them up in target disk modes and mounting them on the Pismo, but I can't make the pismo boot from the inserted Linux installer disc.

going the other way, mounting the pismo as the target disk is basically installing onto an external drive from the perspective of the installer, which hasn't worked for me (yaboot won't install, for example).

maybe this sounds nutty, but is there a way to put a linux/gentoo ppc installer onto a USB thumb drive, like a Cruzer, and install from that?

thanks!

Many apple computers can boot from the ethernet using boot enet from the open firmware prompt. I'm not sure of the specifics but someone here may know more.

umm remove your hard disk, buy a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor, use an other machine to install gentoo on that disk
remount the disk, enjoy the fun: i did that a lot of time, here

p.s.
buy a cd/dvd rom from ebay for < $30

If you want to install from an USB stick/drive, and are unsure about the open firmware boot prompt, this debian guide may help: http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/powerpc/ch05s01.html.en (Scroll down to "5.1.3. Booting from USB memory stick")
