Hi,

I created a program, that can control mpd and mplayer via one commandline interface . It also supports some convenience features like pausing the playing player when you start a movie.

If you want to check it out, here's an ebuild (if you don't have qt4 installed, emerge with USE="qt-static").
I'd also advise you to skim through the small usage section on the hompage.

Could you explain the advantage of your program? I like the idea about qp. But why and when would you like to choose between mpd and mplayer?

Well, mpd and mplayer have very different fields of application, and IMO, they provide everything you need for consuming media, i.e. it's basically a media center. The only thing, that is missing about this "media center", is a way to control it, without having to use player-specific UIs.
My program provides exactly this interface.

I don't really get what you mean by that..

mpd and mplayer have a large overlap in types of media you can play. Ofcourse mpd does not do any video. But most music, if not all, you can play with mplayer as well as with mpd. This is maybe my question, why do you still want to use mpd?

However I think I know the answer myself. I am using mpd mostly for music. Except for some streaming music that mpd does not support (mms). I have written a small python program that I control via lirc and a remote. With that I can either play a playlist via mpd or listen to a stream using mplayer. Maybe adding lirc support to your application is a good idea too?

I use mpd because it is IMO better suited for audio. I can easily display the current track in conky, quickly alter the playlist with ncmpc, and after all, mpd is designed to run as daemon, which probably makes it a bit more efficient as audio player than mplayer (This is just an assumption, but i guess it's true).

lirc support is a good idea, and if enough people want it, i will add it (just like every other possible feature, btw).
However the problem is, that i'm the only developer and the user base is really small. I've also received very little feedback so far, so i'm not sure, where problems are or which features would be needed.
For these reasons, mediacontrol development is currently on hold, but i plan to continue programing, when i've time for it.
