I should add first that I tried to install Ubuntu Hardy Heron on this Pismo earlier today, and when it was about time for me to get the Ubuntu desktop of the Live CD/Install, all I got was nasty zig-zag lines.

So I wonder if I should even proceed trying Gentoo on this machine...I'm not sure why I got that wacky video noise, but OS X installs and operates fine on that PB.

One major consideration for trying linux on this Powerbook is to end up with a zippier, more capable machine. The reason behind this is, I have heard, that older Macs can enjoy new life with a Linux install, as (I presume) Linux has less processing overhead than does Mac OS X, with the result that it is (or feels) faster.

Anyone know if the last statement is true?

Anyway, thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for any advice you may have for me.

getting zigzag lines might be lack of correct drivers, asfaik boot cd's tend to be not to date in drivers. What you could do to make your question clear wether you should proceed with gentoo is provide list of hardware using lspci...after you boot any linux cd.

-I have no idea what hardwares are used in that notebook, thats the reason of saying you should provide lspci. But there is nothing i can think of saying dont install gentoo if drivers are available

-I cant comment on speed, en honestly feeling is a very complex phenomenon different to every human being.I dont want to say that linux is slow/faster that wont be true, but gentoo in general gives you all the power in hand to tweak your machine the way u feel like. That means it depends on the user skills to get a faster machine or properly installed machine.

cheers....
