Ok, a couple little fixes here and there, re-made master.

The past few hours the trees were really messed up as i was working on master, now they should all be fixed, and there's been a couple more fixes added to the mix.

I doubt there'd be any panics now, but idk tell me.

@rmh3093 & others: what have you done to get it to crash? I havent had any issues with 2.6.26-rc8-zenmm2-dirty, in fact since switching back to deadline, the laptop has been quite happy.

I am using x86_64 w/ CFLAGS="-march=native -O2 -pipe".

Would that be the issue with HDAPs from the other day? I forget if @cheater said he made a patch or not....i could try the 'Search' feature.... ;)

performance hit? i dont think they should hurt performance, i mean the patches came from the -rt branch so I would assume they decrease latencies at the cost of throughput but i have not done any tests yet

No, it's the RT branch (more particularly rcu-boost)

As it is the only thing that creates/calls the function __rcu_unboost_*

And as for me, my dmesg is clean and my boot is clean, however i get random hardlocks (totally random, i haven't figured out what triggers it, usually it happens when i'm in my terminal and i click over to xchat it will just completely lock)

Anyway, it can't be ignored, I reverted it in my local tree and we'll see if it resolves my hard lock problem (i think it will), anyway in my personal opinion I think it should be un-merged from master until further testing is performed as it clearly is still not sane.

Anyway please post .config of the error (not sure what it looks like), if RCU_BOOST is yes at the time of the error, try making it to N, if N try making it to Y to see if it resolves the problem.

Either way, there's a problem here that should not be ignored

sounds like a memory issue, is everyone with hards locks running 32bit w/ highmem enabled?

32bit w/ highmem, rcu_boost enabled.
i have tried different elevators.

Going to disable rcu_boost and recompile. I'll see how that works if not, I'll post a .config.

@mroconnor:

try to disable softirq and hardirq (if possible), that should solve it ...

I had loads of problems with hardirq & softirq,

Code:
cat /usr/src/linux/.config | grep GROUP
# CONFIG_CGROUPS is not set
# CONFIG_GROUP_SCHED is not set

should be (not) set

@KernelofTruth: I should set CONFIG_CGROUPS and CONFIG_GROUP_SCHED? I never implemented them becuase I had no idea how to use them.

Are you using rcu boost? I'll disable soft/hard irq and check back.

no ;)

(not) set meant subtly to avoid enabling & using them, I only had problems with those (making I/O & X input/output nearly impossible) under load & after it  , it then only would be able to reboot it via magic sysrq key

rcu what ?

I only know of preemptible rcu,

I'll eventually give mm3 a test in the weekend, currently I'm nice & dandy and busy working with mm2 whoever of you guys put that together: great job ! :D

good luck !

OK disabling irg stuff fixed the wonky CPU core. And with out the rcu boost enable I dont get errors on that but I do get this:

yes probably, *_trace is a debugging feature that you usually dont need to enable, could you re-enable the the irq and rcu-boost code but disable hdaps and see if you still get that error

... the reason I ask is because part of the kernel init processes uses rcu-boost which means if that code was buggy everyone should be seeing this bug you are the only one so it seems like to me this patch is only exposing some other flaw in kernel which we need to get fixed

No problem, I'll drop HDAPS support and set rcu_boost and test, then assuming it goes well I'll set hard/soft irqs and see what happens.

On another note do we have any ideas how many -zen/-zenmm users we have and what types of general setups they use(32 vs 64, whackt hardware, etc)?

well if you all started using klive we could track how many users

Ok I hate terrible luck last night testing -zenmm3. I had hardlocks galore and no luck with testing the boost/irq patchs. I think I might have had a wonky .config so I pulled my running config from -zenmm2 and I am starting from scratch. I'll try and test everything again today.

BTW - I am officially embarrassed that I havent been using klive since the early kamikaze days. ANYONE who wants to be involved with testing kernels like this should use this.

I compiled the kernel w/ NO rcu_boost and nothing irq related but left 'RCU_TRACE=y' set to debug.

I left HDAPS/tp_smapi in the config as well.

This warning was thrown:

Jul 16 11:07:59 cosmo ---[ end trace 1f46693f23c22a73 ]---

I havent found too much relating to the exact WARNING but I did find out that lockdep and ftrace dont like each other.
See this: http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/7/15/712

EDIT:
I do not have ftrace enabled in 'Kernel Hacking' but it is in by default w/ x86 I guess?

On to test it out and see what happens.

xconfig doesn't work with zenmm

Code:
-> Running make xconfig...
  HOSTCXX scripts/kconfig/qconf.o
scripts/kconfig/qconf.cc: In member function ‘void ConfigMainWindow::showIntro()’:
scripts/kconfig/qconf.cc:1644: error: invalid conversion from ‘const char*’ to ‘char*’
scripts/kconfig/qconf.cc:1644: error:   initializing argument 1 of ‘int sprintf(char*, const char*, ...)’
scripts/kconfig/qconf.cc:1645: error: expected `;' before ‘)’ token
make[1]: *** [scripts/kconfig/qconf.o] Error 1
make: *** [xconfig] Error 2

I'm lazy, I like xconfig...don't knock it. Gconfig works, however.

And, I have a couple questions...

Where did Adaptive Ondemand Readahead go to/become? Also, does lockless require a config option anymore? I had other questions, but have forgotten them, so I guess I'll just worry about those when I remember.

No problem, I'll drop HDAPS support and set rcu_boost and test, then assuming it goes well I'll set hard/soft irqs and see what happens.

On another note do we have any ideas how many -zen/-zenmm users we have and what types of general setups they use(32 vs 64, whackt hardware, etc)?

well if you all started using klive we could track how many users

done :D

I tried building it, which went fine...that's where my success ended.

I had to chroot into my box to remove it and reinstall my regular zen kernel, as my fallback for some stupid reason didn't like my root partition...that's my problem...

But I got an error and dump that I actually didn't save...I have a feeling that it's got something to do with the CFLAGS I dropped into the Makefile, which I will undo...lol...I'll try again, I guess, but I am excited to see this kernel developing.
