ok, managed to end that thingy somehow (my /home partition hopefully is safe),

pdflush + sync were putting pretty much load on the hdd, dunno what went wrong,

I had the suspicion that reiser4 / reiserfs broke with one of the last commits (mm-wise),

but if everything's still there it just might have been bad chance / the 'good old' fsync-issue ;)

do you use any other filesystems along with reiser4?

yeah, reiserfs (v3.6) on /boot and (encrypted) /home (if reiser4 didn't reserve 5% diskspace I'd use that for /home, too)

all data still's here so no big deal

so u what do on root, could u try this

emerge bonnie
cd <some dir on non reiser4 partition>
emerge --sync&
while(true); do bonnie; done

while thats going keep checking dmesg and see if anything shows up

no need to emerge + launch bonnie,

I've (probably) already found the cause of this clattering (it found me  ):

during reboot / shutdown it already clutters pretty much, then if I "help" a little by using magic sysrq key (like in the last case) it segfaults

Quote:
reiser4 [halt(4920)]: release_unix_file(fs/reiser4/plugin/file/file.c:2365[vs-44]:
WARNING: out of memory?

segmentation fault /sbin/halt ...

kernel BUG at ... invalid opcode: 000[3]SMP

that's all I saw / could write down, this appeared pretty often (but no endless loop)

I'm going to do some bonnie test at earliest after this has been sorted out, otherwise reiser4 bails out pretty early & could lead to data corruption (did I say that this is the only system I have right now  )

thanks

ok, so the latest (nearly 100%) working zenmm is (this is the kernel with the great / neverseen reiser4 fsync-performance :) ):

Quote:
2.6.27-rc1-zenmm0-01717-g9498e0c

I'll do a stage4-backup & try to do what you wrote - as time allows ...

no one other willing to test reiser4 at this stage ?

this would accelerate its development / inclusion even more

sure !,

it did this for several times already, is it supposed to show some strange error message ? ;)

just to get this straight:
1. cd to non-reiser4 partition
2. it syncs once the portage tree
3. it does bonnies all the time (writes them to that non-reiser4 directory)
4. it progresses until it can't read / execute 'true' anymore ?

currently testing:
Quote:
uname -r
2.6.27-rc1-zenmm0-01733-g69b6a0c

that's some pretty nice "output"

ok, strangely bonnie worked fine as long as sync, reboot or shutdown wasn't launched

after that it was only possible to stop that shit with magic sysrq key + r e i s (if lucky), then eventually getting an Emergency sync completed (or what its message is), then u b

trying to force an shutdown pretty much hurts the hdd, so definitely a bad idea (i did this once yesterday :? )

any idea what could be going wrong with release_unix_file ?

this is not the bug that I am getting, the bug only seems to exist if you use reiser4 + ext4

so this bug is caused by using reiser4 + reiserfs ?

strange ...

on what partitions are you using reiser4 ? what compiler / could you please post emerge --info ?

strangely it compiled fine all the time for me so some of the problems might be due to the fact that I'm using gcc-4.3.1 hardened + have fstack-protector-all enabled in kernel-config

this bug (I reported) definitely occurs due to reiser4-usage on / (root), umounting /home, /boot, /usr/portage works fine, but this cluttering still occurs afterwards so either it's related to reiser4 and/or some other vfs, new patching, ... stuff

ok, what did I say / write:

this kernel is killing my hdd :P :(

no need to emerge + launch bonnie,

I've (probably) already found the cause of this clattering (it found me  ):

during reboot / shutdown it already clutters pretty much, then if I "help" a little by using magic sysrq key (like in the last case) it segfaults

that's all I saw / could write down, this appeared pretty often (but no endless loop)

I'm going to do some bonnie test at earliest after this has been sorted out, otherwise reiser4 bails out pretty early & could lead to data corruption (did I say that this is the only system I have right now  )

thanks

this is not the bug that I am getting, the bug only seems to exist if you use reiser4 + ext4

so this bug is caused by using reiser4 + reiserfs ?

strange ...

on what partitions are you using reiser4 ? what compiler / could you please post emerge --info ?

strangely it compiled fine all the time for me so some of the problems might be due to the fact that I'm using gcc-4.3.1 hardened + have fstack-protector-all enabled in kernel-config

this bug (I reported) definitely occurs due to reiser4-usage on / (root), umounting /home, /boot, /usr/portage works fine, but this cluttering still occurs afterwards so either it's related to reiser4 and/or some other vfs, new patching, ... stuff

ok, what did I say / write:

this kernel is killing my hdd :P :(

fetch then checkout a new master and build that, i cleaned up the reiser4 patches and only included the working ones

it works better so far than the other kernels, will do some other tests and see ...

well the fixes that are in reiser4 right now are pretty trivial, i need to figure out what going on with this other patch though

yeah, I suspect something in mm / the kernels experimental nature is the cause

I just hit the above mentioned i/o errors again & it completely hardlocked again, this isn't fun anymore

I'll try to test zenmm in an later stage again (say >.27-rc4-mm), no need to stop reiser4 development, though

meanwhile I'll be using zen-sources (hopefully without hardlocks), could you sync it to 2.6.27-rc2 ?

I believe some of those problems are fixed with rc2

thanks :)

ok, zen-sources isn't that fast compared to zenmm, but at least it's stable & survives emerging compiz-fusion & kde  (still compiling)

these hardlocks definitely are not reiser4's fault (99% sure)

is it possible to merge reiser4 to zen-sources or are there too much differences between zen-sources & zenmm ?

thanks

Just to say: I'm using zenmm from commit 92ba2d0f3355f3429bac0523f288b73bc3dee1d7 and it's working well for me, no hardlocks (I have r4 on /).

i think I encountered this random IO bug on -zenmm also, i got a hardlock, i merged my reiser4 devel patches into -zen if anyone wants to test them

currently testing it & it flies and works stable (until now) :P

no time to play anymore, though, so that'll be my kernel of choice (even though bluetooth doesn't work  )

I fixed my problem with:

Might want to patch thinkpad_ec to look in the right place.

this is of some days ago, aren't really sure it's pertinent :)

Hi @all,

I have compiled 2.6.27-rc1-zenmm0 yesterday.

I have got a Q6600 Core2Quad but it only recognizes one Core like i has a single Prozessor (/proc/cpuinfo only shows CPU0)

I have make oldconfig with my config from zen-sources-2.6.26-zen2.0 with that Kernel everything worked fine.

The Option Configure Maximum number of SMP Processors and NUMA Nodes is disabled and the Maximum number of CPUs is set to 8.

Does anybody know what the problem is ?

If you want i can post my full config.

Thanks,

Just a fast post:

2.6.27-rc1-zenmm0-01731-g7967c49 is running really well as well as my go to -zenmm 2.6.26-rc8-zenmm3.

Will CONFIG_FASTBOOT make it into -zenmm?
