I've been trying out nouveau's drivers on my 6800gt and they work really great. Compositing in metacity is soo much faster! :)
However, I would still like to use nvidia's drivers for the occasional gaming and also to allow me to turn down the fan speed. Since I've installed nouveau when I start X with nvidia's binary driver I just get a Black Screen of Death. I can't kill X with ctrl-alt-backspace or ssh in. Xorg doesn't even produce a log file! Any idea what nouveau did to my nvidia drivers?

Just a guess...

Does the ebuild you used make use of eselect opengl? You might have to switch to a opengl interface that fits to the driver. I could think that nouveu's opengl interface doesn't play well with nvidia's..

nouveau uses x11 opengl files, and nvidia uses their own. you have to eselect opengl set nvidia before using nvidia driver, and eselect opengl set x11 before using nouveau.

Also, you have to unload all modules used by Nouveau before you can start Nvidia's driver again.

I just noticed something odd on my system, not sure why it's been running, but

I had both the nouveau and proprietary nvidia drivers loaded at the same time.
It's been running this way since Apr 15 without any (perceived) problems.

I haven't tried swapping back and forth in X between nvidia/nouveau,
but I'm probably going to do that soon since I'm curious now.

Nvidia ran with both the 195.36.24 and 195.36.15 drivers
Nouveau is nouveau-drm-20100316 and xf86-video-nouveau-0.0.15_pre20100329

Edit to add:
It doesn't seem to like having both of them there when switching between nvidia <-> nouveau
It was just odd that they both autoloaded without any problems.
